I have a gyn appointment at planned parenthood on tuesday..?

and im wondering if they have any male nurse practitioners. I am 17 and I do not want a male doctor because this is my first exam EVER and I wouldnt be comfortable. What should I do if a male doc walks into the room? ahh

Don't worry...If you do get a male doctor, there will also be a female assistant or nurse present.

Do worry that they give you a thorough exam--as one of my daughters went there for birth control pills--and they gave them to her without examining her--that is very dangerous--some people cannot use birth control pills and certain other methods.

Let the receptionist know ahead of time you prefer a female doctor.

Highly unlikely that you will see a male doc. However, if you do just tell them that you would be more comfortable with a female.

Tell the nurse or receptionist as soon as you get there that you are not comfortable with a male doctor or nurse examining you. Don't worry and don't be embarassed, I've been going to these exams for over 25 years now and I still prefer having a female doctor but it does get a little easier to 'grin and bear' the exam after the first few times.

I have only been to planned parenthood twice and it's been over 10 years but I don't think they employ male docs. You can ask when you go in just to make sure that you have a female doc. If by some chance a male did walk in the room, just say, "excuse me I was under the assumption I would have a female and I would be more comfortable with one." Good luck at your exam.

In this situation you, as a patient, have the right to refuse treatment from any healthcare worker. I have been in healthcare education 25+ years and have seen many patients refuse care from a provider of the opposite, or even the same, sex. When you go for your appointment, simply say, "This is my first exam, and I prefer to have a female healthcare provider." And, by the way, male healthcare providers see you as a patient, not a sexy female body. Those who go into healthcare to look at naked bodies don't usually make it to graduation.
