Staph infection treatment..will this work?

I have had 3 boils on my vaginal area, all of which have cleared up on their own in the past five months. I went to my nurse practitioner yesterday b/c of the boils, and she prescribed sulfa-something and Mucoprin (at my insistance) for my nose. She didn't take cultures, because she knew what was going on..in this area, staph infections aren't rare. I know they can reoccur, especially if you are colonized, which is why I asked for the Mucoprin..in hopes of decolonizing myself. Will this clear up the infection in my body? Should I consider myself "clean" after taking all my medication? Also, would it show in regular blood work (CBC levels) if the infection were in my bloodstream?

The medicine is called sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. And I'm sorry..I misspelled the name of the nose treatment, it is Mupirocin.

No culture were taken, therefore I doubt there will be follow-up cultures when I'm done w/ the medication.
So I don't know if this is MRSA or just staph. Will the medicine work for either?

When I am done w/ the meds, should I still be concerned about spreading the infection to others? No one has come into contact w/ the boils and they're gone now..and I washed my hands thoroughly every time I touched them.

It appears that the NP has prescribed a good course of treatment for the Staph infection.

Sulfa-containing antibiotics are regaining popularity as Staph is generally sensitive, the antibiotics are easy on your system and are low-cost to boot.

Once you've had a Staph infection, you tend to be prone. Don't count on the Mucoprin to get rid of all of the Staph forever.

You need to implement the good practice of vigorous hand-washing (warm water, soap for about 2 minutes); get under your fingernails if possible.

A CBC is a good test, but is very general and will not diagnose a Staph infection directly.

Hope this helps.

every human being on the planet is colonized with staph, and there is no getting rid of it, it lives on our skin. Internal staph will be killed with almost any antibiotic, but that is not what causes boils. Those occur because of micro tears in the fragile skin "down there". You would do well to take a probiotic, and hydrate yourself to improve the skin quality, the body needs a minimum of two liters of water a day to function efficiently. A cbc, will show infection thru an elevated wbc value, however, staph usually doesn't cause an elevation because our body doesn't see it as an invader, it's accustomed to it. This is one reason why MRSA is so deadly, it grows to enormous bacterial counts before the body will kick start the immune system to fight it, and often then it is too late. You need to improve the quality of your skin, so the staph cannot invade below the surface.

Question #1: I don't know what your NP prescribed. "Sulfa-something" isn't enough. Too many meds start with this. I'm unable to find information about Mucoprin. Is this the correct spelling? I don't know the frequency and duration of the protocol. Therefore, I can't tell you if this combination is likely to clear up the Staph infection. However, one would hope so.

Question #2: You should consider youself "clean" after 3 negative recultures. The first is taken 24 hours after the last dose of antibiotic (and, I suppose, Mucoprin too).

Question #3: Your white count could be elevated if there is active infection in your body. CBCs don't diagnose bacteria in the blood. Blood cultures do that.

Dear Concerns,
Everyone body has staph - a bacteria that can turn to a serious infection. What you can do to stop from getting this is ! Keep your hands washed. Do you leave the bathroom with unwashed hands ? How about on the way home from work where no one can see you, picking your nose ? Most sore and scab pickers are the ones who seem to be caring Staph more than other people. I picked up a staph years ago in my sinus cavity. I was cleaning at a fire-restoration job and had been picking at my nose. Keep hands clean and don't touch sores when you know your hands are dirty

If your staph infections keep comming back like that, sounds like you have "impatiego" - which is a staph you carry for the rest of your life. When you get "outbreaks", its because you came in contact with someone with ,EX: a cold, the flu, or whatever. Your immune system isnt that strong. You will only be contagious during any outbreaks, and after 24 hours of taking an anti-biotic, you will not be contagious anymore.
If the infection got in your blood stream, yes, they would know. Most likely youll have a starting red streak comming from the infected area.
