What's the difference between an NP and a PA?

What's the difference between a Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority and a Physician Assistant? Aren't they basically the same thing?

my understanding is how they got there.
A NP started as an RN and continued school, as PA may or may have not been a RN, may have been and EMT or in the millitary. Both must practice under the supervision of an MD, (the MD is actually responsable if they screw-up) both can write scripts, but not schedule 2 narcotics

I don't think a PA can write scripts.
