What can an ob/gyn do for amenorrhea / possible annovulation? |
i went to my fna (family nurse practitioner) that i usually see, and she took blood tests to see why i haven't menstruated since march 1st. apparently everything's "fairly normal" so she sent me to an ob/gyn to see what might be up... i have an appointment in 3 weeks (seems so far away!). Well if you are not getting your period it is probably because you are not ovulating (lack of progesterone). They can put you on provera(treatment of stopped menstrual periods (amenorrhea) and abnormal bleeding from the uterus, take this drug usually once daily for 5-10 days during the second half of the planned menstrual cycle or as directed by your doctor. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within 3-7 days after you stop taking the medication.) If you are not ovulating they can put you on clomid (This medication is used to treat infertility in women. It works by stimulating an increase in the amount of hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg (ovulation). first the blood test, thyroid, female hormones and pregnancy test. then, give meds to provoke bleeding - either provera or birth control pills. you may need meds to induce ovulation - fertility medications. some ob/gyn's will do this for you, others will refer you to a specialist. let them know you are ttc because the usual treatment is birth control pills and you dont want this there can be any number of causes for you not to ovulate, good luck. it could be polycystic ovarian syndrome. Its a hormonal imbalance believed to be related to insulin resistance. There is no real test for it but usually diagnosed based on symptoms...weight gain, acne, facial hair, lack of periods etc. They may do a blood test and a ultrasound to see your ovaries. They may put you on medicine to induce your period then usually the pill to regulate you. See your doctor. |
