I bled during my flu shot today. Is this normal, and is it safe that this happened?

There was just a little blood, but still, I thought shots weren't supposed to make you bleed. The nurse practitioner said it was okay, but frankly, I don't trust her.

It's not that I'm looking for expert medical advice. I'm just looking for other people with similar experiences. Snarky attitudes aren't necessary.

It is perfectly normal for an Intramuscular injection to bleed. It actually indicates that the vaccine went were it was intended. Muscles are deep and are rich in blood supply. Flu vaccines are given as an intramuscular injection and requires a larger bore needle. The needle size choice should be made according to your build. If you are of a smaller stature, a smaller needle could be used which may have minimized the bleeding, but your nurse practicioner is correct. If you dont trust her, you should find someone that you would trust.

I just had a tetanus shot and was surprised to see blood on my shirt sleeve when I got home. She probably just hit a superficial skin vessel and it bled a little. When they inject you with a vaccine they are supposed to pull back on the syringe to make sure they are not in a vessel in the muscle. If she did inject you in a muscle vessel you would have had a reaction. She hit a skin vessel and you, like me, are fine!
You don't trust a nurse but you trust people on Yahoo! Answers?

Everything is fine and dandy, people bleed when skin breaks. As far as you bleeding when punctured by a small needle, thats not such a big deal. I think it varies between people.

ermm.. i think thats a normal reaction because when you put a needle inside there must be a hole so the blood comes out..

Your fine, sometimes they hit a small vein.
