Still don't have a midwife...?

Hey,

I am really hoping this question doesn't sound stupid but I am a bit confused.

*starts from beginning*
Ok I had an early medical abortion when I was 8 weeks pregnant and it was only 3 weeks ago that I found out the termination hadn't been successful and that I am still continuing the pregnancy. This means that I had missed my 12 week scan and at my 20 week scan I saw the hospital midwife. I have been to my doctors since but still haven't had a midwife administered to me... whenever I mention it the GP/nurse practitioner he/she just replies with 'oh'. So I am just wondering, since I need to take the midwife thing into my own hands, who should I contact to make an appointment and for when? (I am currently 22 weeks preg)

Any info would be gratefully received and any nasty comments will be reported. Thanks in advance xxx

To the people in the USA, I'm in the UK so it is usual to have a scan at 12 and 20 weeks!

Latest NICE guidelines for midwifery care in the U.K say you should start to see a midwife at 24 weeks with your first baby. Most U.K Gp's have a midwife assigned to them so you need to enquire with the receptionist about this and make an appointment. If they do not have a midwife you have three choices, you can either ring the hospital ante natal clinic and arrange all your care there or, you can change your G.P to one that has a midwife. It is not always easy to change G.P. but you have a right during pregnancy to access one who provides maternity care, this may be temporary, just for your pregnancy. You can also see your G.P for care, but a midwife is better as she is the expert in normal pregnancy. You need to be seen at approximately 24, 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 41 weeks by either your midwife, the hospital or your G.P. Good Luck

search the phone book.... or ask to see the one from the hospital again.... Good luck!

You should be seeing an OB/midwife. Sometimes women see a GP until the final month, and then see an OB, but in your special case, I'd insist on seeing someone who specializes in prenatal care.

i would find a new OB/GYN and tell them what your going through. there is no reason for someone to question you like that. forget the midwife, go see a dr.

just speak to the reception at your GP's and ask to make an appointment with the midwife.

if for what ever reason they refuse then just ask for the number for the community midwfies office at the local hospital.

Your GP Surgery should have its own dedicated midwife or team of midwives.Ask at your Gp Surgery

It isn't the Family Practice doctor's responsibility to find an OB or midwife for you. That is up to you. However you can request from the clerks at the front desk a list of OBs that accept your insurance. Just a note: Because you had a failed abortion, you are considered high risk. It could have done damage to you and/or baby. So you really need to be seeing an OB. Midwives are not equipped to handle high risk pregnancies. (In most states here in the US, at the onset of you being high risk the midwife will at least have you seeing an OB part of the time.) You will need at the very least a level two u/s and several other tests run.

Hugs!

I absolutely love mid-wives and am glad to hear that you are looking for one instead of a regular doctor. The first thing I would do is contact the hospital where you want to deliver and get a list of mid-wives that have rights to deliver there. Then start contacting them. At the very first appointment tell them what all has happened. I have delivered 3 babies with mid-wives and they completely kick doctor's butts. I was 7 months pregnant with my first baby and the doctor I was seeing didn't even know my name!! I immediately switched to a mid-wife and she delivered me. Then 10 months later I was pregnant again, went into her office and she remembered my name and my son's name. They are typically FAR more personal and concerned not only with the medical aspect of the birth, but with you as a person. Talk to the hospital, talk to friends of yours who have used midwives, and if all else fails start calling from the yellow pages. I guarantee you that you can find a mid-wife who will treat you better than you are being treated right now. Good Luck!

i reallly feel for u!
but i guess this is the NHS, its a complete joke
u have the right to have a midwife!
go to your GP and demand that u get a midwife!
dont take any excuses!
good luck with everythin

Hi, goodness i feel for you, did you have no idea that you were still pregnant? (not judging because hey no-one has the right to judge without knowing the full story,.. as for the midwife thing, i didn't get assigned a midwife till i was around 28weeks pregnant (didn't help that i was on my travels though) but when I eventually got one of my 'own' i didn't particularly like her, nice enough but just not someone I would choose to see me through thr throes of pain!!!

However the day my baby decided to come, i had a complete stranger turn up (i opted for a home birth) and she was the best thing since sliced bread!! she and the trainee midwife were so lovely, warm and funny I couldn't of asked for nicer, ...she did call in a third midwife, who wasn't very nice and I then found out no one dares argue with a woman in pain!!! got shut of her quite quick!!!
Just wanted to share with you, and tell you not to worry, when the time comes I hope you have the best available.. and I am positive things will turn out for the absolute best.. good luck hun.. xx

EDIT: glad i have helped you feel better, where abouts are you hun? you should go to the maternity unit at your hospital and ask (insist) to see the head midwife and explain to her your situation.. ask her for a midwife to be assigned to you within a week.. this should get things moving, but whoever you get I am really sure you will get a lovely midwife, and if you don't feel comfy with her (but I am sure you will) you can request another one.. I wish you all the best and keep us posted on how you get on.. x

Of course your doctor doesn't want you to use a midwife, he'd loose money. Plus you need to find the RIGHT midwife for you, so start calling around and make some appointments to meet some midwives.

(FYI there is no such thing as a routine scan at 12 weeks, the American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians has said that they do not recommend ultrasounds as a routine part of prenatal care)

If u live in England, u just make the appointment with the midwife urself. I wasnt referred to my midwife I just booked the appointment with the receptionist on the desk.

I had my midwife from when I was 8 weeks pregnant and had my booking in appointment at 10 weeks, it may depend on your local nhs trust.
I'd be wanting to know why you went for an abortion and it was'nt successful.
good luck xx

Why not use the doctor? If not then find one yourself. The hospital may be a little less willing to help you considering the attempted abortion. You can't stop people from having their own opinions about what you did. You may just have to do it yourself.
