Night cough remedy for acute infectious bronchitis?

I've had acute bacterial bronchitis for over a week now. Started antibiotics two days ago after seeing a nurse practitioner. The case is very open-and-shut, so I'm not looking for any advice re: the bronchitis itself.

My problem is the cough. During the day it eases off, but at night it attacks me like a monster. In some cases the spasms are so bad I can't control my breathing; I almost called 911 last night. The following drugs have been COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE: Albuterol, benzonatate, dextromethorphan, guaifenesin. The only two proven remedies have been intense steam (e.g. hot bath) and daylight (go figure).

Is there ANYTHING that can control a bronchitis night cough? And why the heck is it so much worse at night?

Thanks all. I forgot to mention this is unrelated to sleep position. Of course, lying down is uncomfortable, but when I almost called 911 it was so bad I'd already given up on trying to sleep and was hacking in a crumpled position on the floor for hours. The cough also steadily worsens after the sun goes down even though it'd be well before bedtime. Bizarre, but also extremely frustrating and demoralizing.

Get yourself a humidifier or if you have radiators put bowls filled with water on them to evaporate. Try to sleep in a somewhat sitting positions with several pillow under your upper body. If it gets really bad go into the bathroom, close the door and turn on the hot shower until the bathroom is all steamed up. This will help you breathe easier.
Mix some hot tap water with some honey and drink it up, it not only will ease the cough, but helps you fall back asleep. For me the water and honey works better than any cough medicine, unless it's something with codein.

Feel better!!

Cough is due to an irritation in you throat. Albuterol, benzonatate, and such are broncho dilators... meaning they help to ease the swelling of aveoli in your lungs. It gets worse overnight because of the temperature of the air, the position where you sleep and the fact that you probably snore and sleep with your mouth open. Even if that's not the case, start by trying home remedies like tea and honey and whatever source that provides you a protective coating over your throat (lozenges, mint candy, etc). On the other hand, night cough medicines shouldn't affect your current treatment and you should be able to get relief for your cough with them. I would use it if available.

I just had that not too long ago, and I would def. recommend either a vaporizor in your room or a vicks plug in. All that requires is for you to buy the individual vicks slits that spread the smell of vicks vaporizing throughout your room and soothes everything! That helps A LOT with the cough. I've been there. I hope you feel better!

THE REASON WHY IT IS WORSE AT NIGHT IS BECAUSE LYING DOWN PRODUCES MORE MUCUS TO DRAIN DOWN THE THROAT AND THAT IS WHAT ULTIMATELY MAKES YOU COUGH.

MY 2 YEAR OLD SON HAS JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH BRONCHITUS, UPPER RESPERITORY INFECTION AND MIDDLE EAR INFECTION. HE'S BEEN COUGHING NON-STOP FOR TWO DAYS NOW.

THE ONLY THING I'M TRYING IS A VAPORIZOR RIGHT BY HIS HEAD...LOADED WITH VICKS...TWO TIMES THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT. I HAVE HIM ELEVATED. HE'S CURRENTLY SLEEPING ON 3 PILLOWS. A LOT I KNOW BUT THE HIGHER YOU CAN SLEEP WITH YOUR UPPER BODY UP...THE BETTER.

SINCE YOUR AN ADULT, I DON'T SEE WHY A NICE HARDY ALCOHOLIC DRINK WOULDNT HELP YOU.

I have suffered with Bronchitis my whole life and it has always been worse at Night. Try sleeping with a Humidifier beside your bed and sleep on (2) pillows. This will help with your breathing and hence your coughing. Unfortunately with Bronchitis it has to run its course.I t normally takes me a good two weeks to get over it, but last year it turned to Pnuemonia. Do be careful and go back to your Doctor if you are not well after 10 days of therapy and Medication.

First you need to keep the mucus thin and moving,so i would suggest mucinex in the blue box and a humitifier on 4 hours before bedtime also close the door when you cut on the humitifier.
