I need serious advice..?

I have not had a period now going on 5 months. I have had my thyroid, hormones, and cholesterol checked and everything was normal. I have even had my blood drawn for possible pregnancy twice, and they were negative both times. My nurse practitioner said it is due to stress.
However, I don't have that much stress in my life right now. I am 26 years old, and I have severe hot flashes, and my hands feel like I am always holding a cup of something hot.
I went to see my primary care physician, and at the end of my visit she tried to perscribe me some prozac. When I asked why she said that it would help with any stress that I may have. Then I asked to be refferred to an endocrinalogist my doctor said she wanted my to try the prozac for a week. After a week come back in and have my hormone levels retested. I don't understand. If anyone has any information or knows what my symptoms could be related to I would really appriciate it. Thank you.

Doctors don't pull that "stress" crap with men. They look for a cause. You could have something seriously wrong with you which is causing menopausal symptoms. If you were that stressed out you would know it. Insist on a referral to the endocrinologist. You need a new primary care doctor. Prozac takes 4 to 6 weeks to work and it doesn't sound as if you need it.. Since you are a woman, you need to put your foot down. Please change doctors.

A female does not have a period unless there is enough body fat in her. If she is too thin, her body will react by trying to save her energy level by stopping periods. The body knows that if ovulation occurred and the girl had sex the body could not sustain a pregnancy. On the other hand sometimes if women are obese, sometime they stop having periods.
. Is your weigh balanced for your body? When a female is extremely overactive, for example, with excessive running or some activity which overly physically stresses the body in that way this also will cause periods to stop.

If you aren't ready to try Prozac to reduce stress, then get a second (or third) opinion. It very well could be stress, but it could be something much more serious. If you are artificially relaxed and you have other tell tale symptoms of something...?...you may not worry enough about it to say something. It is your body.
I once had a 7 month period that was (a symptom)stopped by depo( I have no idea how much longer it would have continued)...come to find out several years later that I did, in fact, have a problem in my endocrine system that lead to many other issues that I am working on now. I allowed my problem to be blamed on stress. If I were prescribed Prozac, it is hard to say whether or not I would have gone to another doctor!
If it does prove to be stress, it is still your choice whether or not to take Prozac. Some people need and benefit from Prozac. Others find different ways to deal with their stress....More "me time", exercise, time with friends...read...whatever may work for you!
Take care!
