Which is the better anti-depressant?

My gyno diagnosed me with depression and prescribed me Lexapro. I took my prescription to the pharmacy and was told that my insurance wouldn't cover it because the brand didn't have a generic made for it, and so I was going to have to pay about $80 every month for it. On the plus side, I do have about 8 packs of 7-day samples that a nurse practitioner gave me a few months ago, so that would do me for 2 months, and then I could probably afford it.
When I told my gyno that insurance wouldn't cover it, she prescribe me Zoloft, knowing that they had a generic. I took it to the pharmacy and got the generic for free. Which would be better: getting generic Zoloft for free or paying for Lexapro and getting the real stuff. I don't know anything about this stuff.

Or any suggestions on better anti-depressants than either of the two?

Also, on the lexapro she prescribed me a 10 mg dose, and on the zoloft a 50 mg dose. Is this right or did she right the dosage wrong?

There are SO many different antidepressants out there, and it's difficult to recommend one over another one because each person has a different experience with each anti-depressant. what works for one person might not work for another.

another issue is that most antidepressants take a while to "kick in", so you have to be patient to see results.

i've tried paxil, and that worked but hurt my stomach excessively.
then i tried serzone, and that worked, but gave me a slight headache and made me super groggy.
a friend of mine is on prozac, and has no negative side effects.

there are different types of antidepressants, so your best bet is to do some online research and try different ones until you find one that best meets your needs.

try this website- it's called "Antidepresants- selecting the one that's right for you:

good luck with everything!

It really depends on the individual. You may do better on one verses another. I take Effexor xr and works excellent for me, but my mother has to take prozac and my sister had to take Lexapro. Effexor made them more crazy (lol). You will unfortunately have to try them out, I would try the least expensive and if it works for you then great, if not, try another. Everyone is different.

I never took either one, even though my Dr. prescribed Lexapro. I don't like to take any medication at all. But she said is a good med. I even call her today to see if she will give some sleeping pills. And she asked me, if I was taking the Lexapro, I said no. She said Lexapro is better than taking sleeping pills.

I met long time ago one lady that was in Zoloft, maybe in a high dose because she looked like a zombie, with no emotion in her face. But everybody is different. You should do research about both meds. And go back to your doctor and base in her knowledge, she will explain which one is the best for you. I don't really know how severe is your case. But if is mild I think Lexapro will do.

And remember you also have to help yourself.Try to engage in some activities if you can. You don't want to be depending on meds. all your life.

Look all also at the side effects of all those meds.

Also you should call to your general doctor.

Good luck!!

I would get a second opinion in all due respect to your gyno. A mental health specialist can help determine if this is a long term or short term depression. It might be worth the consult to make sure you are getting all the support and assistance you deserve.
Good Luck ;)
