What are the chances of something serious?

I have had swollen lymph nodes in my hips for probly the past two years. The doctors always said it was just sinuses and nothing to worry about. Finally, they found out I had a vaginal infection and also did a CT scan. Today, they told me (about three weeks after the scan) when I called them that I need to meet with the doctor on Monday, and will also be referred to a surgeon. The lady I spoke with wasn't sure what it could be, or didn't want to give suggestions. The knots have caused a lot of pain and I had abnormal bleeding about this time last year until they put me on the pill. There are less knots after I took the antibiotic for the infection, but they are still there, and the nurse practitioner said the kind of infection I had should not cause them to be enlarged. What should I expect to hear from the doctor on monday?

I am 18 years old

I don't want to impose anything nor cause any alarm to you nor make you feel better by saying something good, but there is a chance of something serious given the symptoms you presented with. I believe the swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenitis if I'm not mistaken) could be cause by an infection, whether its bacterial or viral only lab tests can determine this; vaginal bleeding and bloody discharge could be caused by a viral infection, but since you have mentioned that this has receded after taking medications (antibiotics), this only meant that you had a bacterial infection.

The knots were perhaps the by-product or the result of the infection itself, and the residual ones may have been left and would probably clear in the future if medications are continued. While what the nurse practitioner said may be true, it must be known that infections and their effects vary from one person to another, since some people have a hyperactive immune system while some may just have an immune response that is slower than the average; this "lag time" has different effects, and swelling of lymph nodes could indicate that your immune system takes more time than usual before clearing an infection. This also depends on the strain of bacterial pathogen, since some are more aggresive than other strains, making them clear out a little longer than if they were less aggresive.

Well, I'm not sure when you took the CT, but I believe that your doctor will discuss the result of your CT scan by the time you see him/her, as well as the infection you have had, or possibly still have, and any further medications you may need to take. You will also be briefed about the surgeon referral and the type of surgery you will undergo, its risk factors, and basically the overall protocol of the surgery both pre-op and post-op (op for operative), should surgery be still on the table. I'm not sure what the nature of your surgery is, but perhaps they may do a biopsy or something else...whatever the nature is, these will all be explained by the doctor, and I suggest you mention some of the things above I have said even though what I say is not of a big help.

I hope you don't think that I am being invasive, but could you please update and add information regarding what the doctor will say after your doctor's visit? I would very much like to hear from you regarding this, and I am as concerned as you are about how this would turn out. Thank you and I hope that I have helped you in any way, and would be glad to help you in the future should you need any more help.

Addendum:
Thank you for the update. And that's very nice to hear that you are going to be ok. I guess rest and supplements are the only things you may need and the rest will be history.

I wish you well.
