Safe to take two anti-depressants at same time?

This is a question for a doctor, pharmacist or nurse practitioner. Is it safe for an otherwise healthy person to take Sertraline (Zoloft) and Tofranil-PM together? One is an SSRI and the other is a tricyclic, and it seems like an awful lot of medication to me. But my doctor says it's perfectly safe to take them. I appreciate any feedback.

Safe only if it is not for long tem use. Do you take both at the same time. Ideally you should take the Zoloft in the AM and the Tofranil in the PM. Does the zoloft make you drowsy? How long have you been on both meds? Do you have many side effects? Is your Dr. a psychiatrist? Has he mentioned to you how long he would like to keep you on both meds? I just want to make sure that you're being properly supervised. Do you suffer from a diagnosed chemical imbalance and are you also receiving counselling?

Thanks and I hope you will get back to me,

I would say go with your doctor's advice, but if you are hesitant it's okay to get a second opinion. It's your health and you should feel comfortable maintaining it

no one works against the other I would say stick with the generic Prozac as the trycilic ha a few nasty side effects thirst sweating tirdness , i have had no bad effects from the Prozac generic

It is not uncommon for people who have major depressive disorder and cannot get control of their depression with one medication to take more than one. These medications work differently. Zoloft effects seratonin while Tofranil-PM effects primarily norepinephrine.

The Tofranil-PM is probably to help you sleep at night.

You are correct, these medications should be used with caution together, but it is alright to take them together under your doctor's supervision.

This is from my soon to be wife who is a chiropratic assistant and has alot of knowledge with safety problems with anti depressants. Anti depressants (ads) have to formulated to your needs. That is why no two presciptions work for one person. If someone takes to much ads that can off balance them very much. An example is when my sister in law had her prescription increased and it off balanced her enough that she needed to go home work. She is taking zoloft. When i say off balance it does the opposite of what it needs to do which means you actually become very depressed.

Know this is something that you can do if you dont want to take medicatioon for your depression. "Corrective Chiropratic" which means that the chiropractor fixes your body and helps you become more healthy and all with out medication. Trust me i know this sounds wierd saying chiropratic care would help with depression but it worked on me. I had bad bad stress and anxiety problems. My chiropractor told me that my spine was inverted (very bad and dangerous) because of my time in the marine corps that made my connection of my nervers from my brain and the rest of the body was offset and making the problems that i had. Three months no anxiety and my stress is at a great level my blood pressure is normal.

Important information is that your brain is responsible with depression. When your spinal cord compresses your brain stem that is when problems accure. This happens to everyone. I would tell you to just try it. Planet Chiropratic and Delta Chiropratic is two big names in corrective care.

look online for Zoloft side effects, uses, and contradictory medicine.

For example, (and i hate to use this) Anna Nicole Smith's son was taking Lexapro, Zoloft (i think) and of course methadone....that's a lethal combination.

However, i take Lexapro at night, and i also have Xanax that i can take anytime i need to...the two do not act with or against each other.

You just need to look mainly for the "DO NOT TAKE THE FOLLOWING MEDICATIONS:" for both scripts. If it says, "use caution or consult with your doctor if you are taking __________" then it should be fine...i'm taking an antibiotic now that has a caution for Xanax...haven't had a problem.

Quite honestly...the Zoloft should put you to sleep if you take it at night...you shouldn't need the sleeper pill (if that's what it is...). Or, better yet, instead of a sleeper pill...try to get muscle relaxers to put you to sleep.

They are usually safe together and many other people have taken this combination without problems. However, a rare complication is called "serotonin syndrome." This is because both sertraline (Zoloft) and imipramine (Tofranil) boost the brain's own natural serotonin chemical transmitter system, and the two together might boost this system more than either one alone. The serotonin syndrome can involve agitation and confusion. If you don't experience something like this, then you are probably just fine.
