Can a General Physician or Nurse Practitioner prescribe diet pills or do I need to see a diet/nutritionist?

There is this obesity medication called Phentermine and I am interested in trying it however, under my insurance there are no dieticians or nutritionist nowhere near my area so Im wondering if my regular Dr. would prescribe it for me.

Dietitians and nutritionists often do not have the medical license required to prescribe medications. Such medications MUST be prescribed by NPs or physicians. The only way to know if your doctor will prescribe it is to ask. Most doctors won't prescribe Phentermine for safety reasons, but there are other, safer medications available. Please do consult your doctor.

your regular doctor can prescribe them for you. or he might know of something better, more safer and possibly that your rx will cover. please don't ever start something like that without your doctor's permission. good luck losing weight.

No, a nurse cannot prescribe medicine, but a nurse practitioner can.
