Why is the maternity nurse practitioner usually assist with chilbirth??

the name itself implies that :)

you mean the midwife????????????????
duh. to help with the delivery.

because all the OBGYN doctors are afraid of being sued.

Normal child birth is totally a physiological process.A maternity assistant can give suitable nursing care. But in case a complication suddenly comes up a doctor`s intervention is needed.
