Obgyn vs. nurse practitioner? |
i dont even know what a nurse practitioner is but i have to go see one because there are no female gynos in my area, whats a nurse practioner? A nurse practitioner is a nurse (male or female) who is trained in the basics of medicine. S/he cannot prescribe medications, but s/he CAN make recommendations to the prescribing doctor. So if you go in complaining of chest congestion and s/he determines you have bronchitis for example, s/he can recommend a course of antibiotics that the prescribing doctor -- to whom s/he answers to -- will then write a prescription for. There is no difference in care, and chances are, an NP is actually going to be more thorough because s/he can spend more time with you. If you ask me a nurse practioner is just as good. I saw one when I was pregnant when my doctor wans't available and she did a great job. They are great, the are like a docotor but during the visit on sertin things they have to talk talk to the docotor they work under. ( I work at a FP and that is what she does) I think they are awsome. good luck hun. I personally see an NP and shes wonderful! NPs are registered nurses with master's degrees. They are requried to have experience in nursing before they can return to school, so they have plenty of experience with patient care. I personally love the fact that an NP has more patient experience. As far as I know, NPs can prescribe meds, mine does....but yeah..they are just as good as doctors. To me they are pretty much the same. Nurse practioners can do almost everything that a OB/GYN can do. Both my OB/GYN and my son's peidatrian have nurse practioners and to me sometimes the nurse practioners actually are easier to understand. |
