My Speech on Tipping and why is should be done away with?

Please be honest

Tipping is what is expected in our scociety. We pay extra to waiters and waitresses, cab drivers, and hotel employes. I think this is wrong. These people earn a salary the same way the rest of the working world does. Nurses, Lawyers and so on do not get extra money. Those who say "Getting tips is how I live" are wrong. They can get a higher paying job if they need the money. It has been expected that a tip will be given no matter how badly the job was done. You are labled a cheapskate if you give little or no money. Tips should be a rare treat to those who provide great service to you and your family. Have you ever tipped the pizza man only to discover this is not your order or toppings are missing? Or been to a resturant and nobody comes to you to take your order for fifteen minutes? In these cases a tip should not be given, except a verbal one. The very few amount of workers who get tips should expect their salary and be happy with it. Stop expecting Tips!

A couple of facts are wrong. Restaurant servers usually earn a salary which is way below minimum wage. This is done and is legal because of the expectation that they will earn most of their money on tips. If you want to argue that servers should not be tipped but should just be paid decent wages by the restaurant owners, and tips should be a bonus, that is a different matter worth presenting. It IS that way in some other countries and it works for them but it is a long standing custom. In Switzerland, for instance, the prices you see on the menu are quite high but they represent exactly the total you will see on your bill. The full cost paid to the server is included as is any tax. So if you get an entree for 20 Franks and your companion gets an entree for 15 Franks you leave $35 Franks on the table and leave. Maybe give a couple of extra for nice service.

Also, if you home-delivered pizza has the wrong toppings it is not the fault of the delivery person.

Waiters earn like $2 an hour. Tips are how they actually get money. They earn far less than your average retail job without the tips.

Actually, if you make tips from your job, the law doesnt require minimuim wage.
And to us 16 year olds who CANT get a better job, tips are really important.

cheapskate idiot

1. Waiters and waitresses get paid well below minimum wage. They do depend up tips to supplement their income. As for getting higher paying jobs, that depends upon their circumstances- education level, transportation, etc. Cab drivers are often responsible for their own cabs. And, if someone stiffs them, the tips can supplement what they lost.

2. Nurse and lawyers do not get tips because they are working in well paid jobs that provide benefits. And, in most cases, they are NOT supposed to take tips. Tips can be considered bribes.

3. Tips could be a rare treat- however, the pizza delivery guy is not responsible for how my pizza is made, he/she is just delivering my pizza. And, he/she is using his/her own money to pay for the up keep of the car (gas, maintenance, etc.)

4. I even tip people like a painter. He spent weeks doing a great job. He is a friend of a friend and needs all the money he can get. He did a great job and we gave him a tip. I even tipped the garage door repair man. He came out in sub-zero weather and fixed my garage door so I could get to work. He finished the job in less than an hour.

So, I say pay those who live for tips a living wage and we won't have to worry about tips.

Have you EVER worked before? Do you know what it is like to stand on your feet all day, serving people and getting no tips? Put yourself in their shoes, so to speak.

Yes these people get a salary most mkee mim. wage. In some states they under the min. wage becasue the waitress/waiter is soppose th take part of thier tips to bring it up to min. If you get good service you tip if you do not you don't. There are some people who work for tips only. I did as a restroon att. I got no salary and had my tips only. I be willing to bet you have never had to live on min. wage I find that those who have money are the only ones hard hearted engought to make the type of speech you made. As far as the pizza guy it was not his fault there is a topping missing he was not the cook. Hee is the one out in traffic to bring you your food. Do you have any idea how many are hurt on the job, including being rod at gun point. I hope someday you well know what it is like to have to live on a very small amount of money.

Some professions around where I live only pay $3.15 per hour to their wait staff. Tips is how these folks make their money. Knowing that, I keep this in mind, if the service is excellent, I will tip 20%, not quite up to par 15%, lousey, 10%. I keep in mind what is their fault and what is not. If it's a kitchen problem, I send the food back, but do not take that out on the waiter. I just try to keep things fair.

wow, i'm glad we're not friends, cuz if we were, we wouldn't be friends. i think all the other comments on here say it well enough. i'm just glad i never will wait on you, cuz i bet you do lots of complaining even when the service is good.

You are a moron. I barely read though this, here's a hint PARAGRAPHS!

Some waiters make 4.50/hr. That really is not a Lot. You need to do some research before you start a debate, seriously.

Me personally, I tip the pizza dude/dudette, and I never once in my life have received the wrong pizza or had my pizza missing toppings. I have also never have had to wait more than 15 minutes at a restaurant without having someone take my order.

Also, bad service sometimes happens for a reason. The waiter/ whatever they do, is fed up with rude cheap people and dancing for a few bucks, to some ***-clowns like you.
