Nurse Anesthetists?

Who are they? What do they do? How long does it take to become one? Is the pay good?

You need to earn a BSN degree in nursing, and then work for at least 2-3 years in a critical care unit (ICU or CCU) before you can gain entrance into a school that will earn you a master's degree in nursing anesthesia which qualifies you to be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). The CRNA programs are 2-3 years full-time and the are very difficult to get into - spaces are limited and entry is very competative - don't even try to apply if you have a GPA of less than a 3.5. The program is challenging, there is a lot of math and chemistry. Many people find it virtually impossible to work even part time while in the program.

Once you graduate and pass your certification exam, starting salary is about $120,000 per year, and you work with a team of anesthesiologists (in most cases) and perform almost the same job as an MDA (doc of anesthesia) - some procedures you might not be able to do depending on your facility's policies.
