This is seroius. Thinking of a career change.!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I currently work as a care assistant in a care home. I am a qualified teacher in computers and have got all the aualifications in the care industry. The delemma is, do I go part-time and go to uni to get my nurses qualifications or stick to where I am at? Bearing in mind, I have a husband who is poorly, a son of my own and a step-daughter. I want to further my career but the financial obligations can be extreme. What are your ideas. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good money in nursing... plus it's a stable field, i.e. you'll always have work.

The schooling can be tough though, it weeds out people that werent meant for it. But it sounds like by your qualifications, you'll be OK.

I realize financial obligations can be tough, but it sounds like with your income and child situation you should qualify for some sort of financial assistance. Make sure you look into that.

It'll be hard work of course, but totally worth it... both for you and your family.

complicated!
Save up to go back to school, to lessen the financial reprecussions? Make sure to have your family on your side to support you.

Good luck!

You could either take night classes at a college or do online classes. I would go for it no matter what! It's your life and you career! Don't sell yourself short!

My answer is this:

Decide what YOU want, what will make YOU happy and still provide income for the family. There will be no easy route if it means going to school and working, there will be long long days and early mornings, but millions have done it before you and I am positive you can too if its what you want.

Best wishes in your decision...and Happy 2008!!

sounds like your hands are tied, i would say go for it, and live out what you want to do ,but the reality is not all of us can, esp when we have responsibilities, like the ones you mentioned which makes it hard

Before you make any decisions find out if there are any grants you can access. Some universities and colleges provide grants for specific situations and in the UK I remember adverts a year or so ago saying that you could get money from the government for training to be a nurse. Once you have all that information and know what you are eligible for you can work out whether you can afford to go part time. Be warned, some of the grants may require you to be studying full time so read all the small print!

stay where you are--did you ever notice that doctors and nurses and people like that always are completely broke after finishing college and usually 4-5 years after? it will just mess you up and get you stuck in deeper hole. stick with what you do, and you will get raises the more experience you get...hope this helps!

You should find a job which will assist you in further education in nursing, i.e. health-care industry. If you can finance your LVN degree through education loan while you are still working, which will get you a job into a health-care provider. You will worth more money, your new employer will very likely willing to assist you in getting an RN degree.
Don't quit your day job until you are sure, good luck!

if you can manage to find a part time job as a computer teacher and going to school for nursing would be a good idea, provided your huband is also working. otherwise you can look into programs like respiratory therapy, which is a short term program, and less stressful compared to nursing and work full time. are you sure that healthcare is the field you like? if so there are plenty of opportunities there and u will never be laid offfff!

As hard as it will be, and it WILL be hard, I say go for it. No one is getting any younger and the sooner you start the more money you will make in the long run. It will be horrible at times but in the end it will be worth it. And if your hubby is poorly you may soon be the only means of income if not already. The more you make the better off your kids will be!

Best of Luck!

my wife works as a care assistant and all I can say is its a hard job with lots of responsibilities but not much financial reward. Maybe you could work a few nights as a care assistant and go to uni. The Mrs has worked with many, many people who have done that to get better qualified. I'd say go for it and good luck!

That is my dilemma too. I work in a company that isn't in line with my course in college. What makes me stay is the fact that the pay is good, I get to buy things I want. The downside is I'm not happy with my current job. I'm still staying because I have bills to pay, and somehow, I serve as the breadwinner of the family so as much as I want to pursue my career in other company, something's holding me back. I'm not saying it's bad.

My advise for you, and I advise myself too, that you follow what would make you happy BUT take into consideration other factors like the family you support. It should be a win-win situation. Good luck.
