Rejected Puppy?

A few hours ago my dog began to reject one of her puppys. She wont allow it to nurse and has physically attacked it several times. I called the vet and briefly spoke to the assistant who was of no help at all and said "That sometimes happens".

I dont want her to die so I need to know what I need to take care of her

She is 5 days old. I called anouther vet and she gave me a recipe that was very similar to the ones posted on here.

I realize that her chances of survival are slim to none but it cant hurt to try. btw I fed her she actually ate ,and urinated afterwards.

Here we go!

Supplies needed:

Puppy milk replacer and a bottle.
Towel, old blanket, or something for it to lay on.
A timer (depending on how old the puppy is will need to feed quit often. Ask your vet on how often and how much milk it should have every feeding)
A scale ( to weight the puppy every other day to make sure it is gaining weight and not losing)
A puppy sitter ( just for the days you can't be with them to feed)
A warm wet paper towel ( used to wipe the genitalia area to promote urination and bowel movements. The mother usually keeps doing this by licking them till they are 3-4 weeks old then they can do it on their own)
A heating pad or hot water bottle ( this will keep your baby warm while it is not being held and fed. Put layers of towels or a blanket on top of the heating element so the puppy doesn't get burned or cooked. The temperature should be at a normal dogs body temperature. If not get a heating lamp and a thermometer to make sure it isn't to hot.)
And plenty of frequent vet checks for health. A failing puppy fades fast so you will need to keep the vets number handy just in case you have any questions or need to take it in.

And last and not least a lot of TLC. In the end you are going to have one really great puppy who is going to accept you as the mother and will make a great companion.

Go to the pet store and get puppy milk and bottles, heating pad to keep it warm and Feed it yourself. Some times when the mother dose this there is something wrong with the puppy but you can try and save it. Good luck

Maybe she didn't want to have this litter. Maybe the world doesn't need another litter of puppies.

You can buy milk replacer but you may not have time to do this. I know a recipe off the internet that my friend said worked on her puppy

Emergency Puppy Milk Replacer
1 cup whole milk (cow or goat)
1 pinch table grade salt
3 egg yolks - no whites
1 tablespoon corn oil
1/4 teaspoon liquid vitamins

Blend and serve at 95掳 - 100掳 or skin temperature

hope this helpps and all goes well

There is something wrong with it!!!! That is why the mom rejected it!! Sounds mean but the is natural.

Try taking it under your wing.
Dogs have a 'survival of the fittest' attitude which can be brutal.

Make sure that you keep the puppy warm and feed it every 2 hours or so.

put the puppie somewhere safe or take it with you. keep him warm. go to ur local pet store and they have baby bottles and puppy formula they will teach u what to do there and tell u what else u may need to get. ask them what to look for to take it to the vet if u need to. the puppy will need to be fed every 2 hours. can u do it? or get a puppy sitter? its not easy ive done it.

try a diffrent vet or lok up somthing online or hand feed it.

I have read stories like this before, from what ive read the mother thinks that there's something seriously wrong with the puppy.
Some mother's will even kill there own puppy.
I would bring it to the Vet and have him/her looked at.

ive had this happen a couple of times.there is something wrong with the puppy. i know it sounds wierd.but its true.the mother can sense it,so she rejects it to provide more nourishment for the rest of the litter.have the puppy checked by a vet. the vet also sells puppy formula and specialy made nipples to feed the puppy.dont get your hopes up ive done this a few times with only a 25% success rate.good luck

Strangely enough, I was talking to my vet about this today. His recipe is
1 c. whole milk
1 teaspoon salad oil
2 egg yolks
1 dropperful of baby vitamins.

Beat together or buzz in a blender. Keep refrigerated and warm up enough for a feeding to body temperature every 2 hours. Keep the puppy wrapped in a towel to keep it warm, if necessary.

Edit
I'm glad to hear that you got her to eat. Sending you all good wishes that the little one pulls through.

You don't say how old these puppies are? If they do not have their eyes open, there is less chance of you raising it without mom. You can use an eyedropper or a puppy bottle to feed it every 2-3 hours. I use goat's milk, but maternalac or other puppy milk replacer will also work. If you have to, take the other pups off mom and put this one on her bottom udders. Make her lie and don't let her hurt it. Just hold her down and make her nurse the baby.
Moms do reject babies that they feel are weaker or "substandard". Dogs live by instinct, and the fittest do survive. I hope your baby lives.
