Do i have to be a nurse to be become a Physician Assistants?

Do i have to be a nurse to be become a Physician Assistants?

You have gotten a lot of answers, and mine won't make it any clearer, because I will disagree with many of the above.

Very few PAs were RNs before going to the PA program.

Also, while most PA programs in the US are as Diane has stated, there are PA programs in the US which award associate degrees, bachelor degrees and master's degrees, so there is no premed bachelor's requirement for the associates programs.

The PA organizations are pushing for all PA programs to be a Master's degree, however this is not yet a requirement in all states. For example there is an associate degree PA program still in Chicago.

Most PA programs do require some form of experience in a health care setting prior to admission. This can be EMT, CMA, CNA, some even accept volunteer time in health care settings. Many PA students have been in the military in enlisted or officer level health care specialties. Some nurses do go to PA programs, however, most nurses now go to nurse practitioner programs. The choice of PA or NP for nurses is often the focus they wish to have in their practice after graduation.

No you don't need to be. You can major in Health Sciences or Biology and that will prepare you for most Physician's Assistant Programs.

No, the same way doctors don't have to be nurses before they become MDs. However, in my experience the most common career path for PAs is RN to NP to PA.

Others are correct; but most PA schools do require some experience. That can be a number of things. Some PA backgrounds are EMTs, paramedics, respiratory therapists, med techs, MAs etc. Since the best PA schools are masters level, you need to do a bachelors with a premed type course of study. Contact AAPA (.org) or a PA school to get an idea of the # years of experience required.

Addendum to US_DR....yes, there are associates & bachelor's PA programs. I would not recommend an associates to anyone, and I would only recommend a Bachelor's if you are planning for the masters..it is about competition here and in this case, education and the degree matters. He is correct that many PAs are current or ex-military. Other than that, I don't see his answer as disagreeing too much with the others. The pre-med type of education is what's generally required for PA admission to a PA program, but do check it out for yourself to get the true facts.
