Are medical assistants in demand in your area and what do you think about the future of medical assitants.?

Should one just pursue nursing (very difficult to get into) or go the medical assistant route. This is for my fiance as I am pursuing my Ph.D in educational psychology.

In my area (Philadelphia) medical assistant training programs are plentiful and not very competitive. The training can run from a few months to a year and a half. None are considered on par with college level programs. The qualifications are only good enough to get very low level, menial positions with minimal salaries.

Traditional Nursing programs are very competitive just now. But, the demand for well qualified nurses is incredible. Having a 4 year degree will provide for many more and better opportunities over the course of a career.

They are actually not in demand, and MA programs are the latest scam going in education.

Many doctor's offices are training their own MA's, and gong to a program is not even necessary.

I know one girl that paid $18K for a program, only to find out she could only get paid $9.00 an hour when she got out. In that amount of time, she could have got her RN.
