How much do nursing assistants make an hour on average? |
How much do nursing assistants make an hour on average? A lot of the time it depends on what state you're in and what department you work in. Long Term Care CNA's generally get about $1 hour more than hospital employees because of the physical strain and body wear and tear. I moved from Michigan (where CNA's made $11.50 with no experience to start) to Wyoming (where CNA's made $8.00 with no experience to start). There are also shift differentials depending on what shift you work... the wierder the hours the more you'll make. I would suggest you call the local hospital where you live and ask to speak with human resources they will most likely tell you what the starting rate for CNA's fresh out of school is. It depents on your past experiences and strength of your resume. My dad is a nursing assistant and he makes about $10 an hour, but he started of with $7 four years ago. It also depents on the hospitals you are applying, district hospitals will pay you less, but you will recieve more benifits from them. I'm thinking $11/hour. Depends on where you live. Usually a couple dollars more than minimum wage. In Maryland, Geriatric Nursing Assistants make $13-$15/hour working for Nursing homes own by the federal government, Nearby nursing homes not owned by them, GNAs/CNAs made $11-$13. Wages are higher here because of cost of living (gas, food, rent, bills, etc). If you work in a nursing home or Nursing & Rehab they callit, you make more because of strenuous work, wear and tear on your body. I did it once and will never again, I nearly broke my back. Though benefits are excellent and the shifts isn't alot you can choose from. The worst shift to pick is dayshift and evening shift. CNAs/GNAs can also work private duty or homecare, which can make about $11/hr, also depends on experience. Hospital, probably start around $11/hr or more. If you go to healthcare agencies and you are well-qualified and skilled, you can make much more, close to nursing home pay or more ie. $16/hr. I tried but not trying anymore. My health comes first. |
