Nursing assistants dumped on?

do nursing assistants get any respect? Do other nurses dumpe work on them?

Yes and no. Depends on the other nurses. Being the lowest skilled workers they do the work of least "priority" which is usually the hardest physically. The nurses will delegate a lot of work to them. But, that doesn't always mean that they are being unfairly treated because looking in a chart or yakking on the phone or to a patient could be essential to the patient but does not look like "work" to an aid. But yeah. They get dumped on sometimes. And they DON'T get enough respect.

I'm a nursing assistant, and I don't feel like I get work dumped on me at all. Nurses have different jobs than I do. For instance, I work in a nursing home, so I get people up and dress them, bring them to the bathroom, help them bathe... things like that. Nurses, on the other hand, do other things like check blood pressure and give out medication. I can't do that, so they never try to make me. Different job titles.
I feel that my job is very important to the residents AND the nurses, and so do they.

Nursing Assistants have very tough and underappreciated jobs. Yes, the RN's dump a large percentage of the workload on them. In my experience, they generally work harder than the nurses and get paid only a fraction of what the nurses get. In the nursing homes, I've actually got more respect for the assistants than for the nurses.

yes and no,i'm a nurse and have always had a lot of respect for n.a.'s but of course they do have to do all the dirty work.
i don't get why anyone would go to a course for n.a.when they can go a few months more and get lpn/lvn diploma and make more money, less dirty work, etc.
i have seen n.a.s doing more than their fair share, under the direction of nurses,my mom worked as a n.a.for 20 yrs.and loved it but she was in surgery.so,i guess it's a matter of choice.but it's a hard job with low pay .

it depends on the nurse. I have worked under some real b*thces that treated us like dirt, and have also had some who will put down the charting and help do rounds when we were short handed. it all depends on the personality of the nurse.

I would imagine so. Being the assistant, it's their job to do so -- thus the title of "assistant". A real nurse, however, will appreciate their assistants and if they have even half the brains and compassion will acknowledge the service their assistants provide. It's not always the case though. If you are the one in this position, just continue to take pride in the work you do, without complaint and eventually you will get the praise and respect you seek.

I've known a few nurses in my time. I don't think I would want to be a N.A. myself. I suspect they rarely let their staff know how much they appreciate them, but they've told me enough horror stories that lead me to believe they do indeed appreciate the back-up. I wish I'd had the nerve to ask them if they're aware of the fact that without their N.A.s their own job would be that much more horrendous. With one girlfriend I did broach this subject and while it took her a moment to think about it she eventually said "thank you ... I hadn't looked at it from that angle before."

In most cases, CNAs do not get the respect they deserve. Nurse's do have a different job than the aides, so to say they "dump" work on CNAs would be not quite true. There are times when the RN should assist, and they don't and that can get frustrating.

It depends on who you work with. Yes some nurses don't give aides any respect, they act like aides are just there to do every little dirty thing they don't want to. Other nurses act that if it wasn't for aides they couldn't get there job done & the pt would never get the attention they need. There are also nurses that if an aide shows interest in learning more, will happily explain what ever procedure they are doing, and also answer to the best of there knowledge any questions an aide might have. Makeing being a health care aide just a learning experiance on a fisrt step to a very rewarding carrier.

I work in a place where is does go both ways, & co-workers that act "ugly" to aides often find them selfs really wishing they had more aides when we are short staffed. Co-workers that appriciate aides, when we are short staffed help each other more offten.

If everyone would just understand that we work in a health care proffession, nurseing home, hospital, hospice, at home care, we all got into this proffession to help people, & if we (nurses, aides, doctors, family) all work together to give the appropiate care to thouse in need. Our health care reputation would be a lot better. And our pts would be a lot healthier & comfortable.

I will get off my soap box now.

As an RN, I can tell you that, as a general rule, NA's get dumped on a lot. I, personally, respect NA's for the work we do and the way that every NA I know works. If you feel that an RN or LPN is dumping more work on you so that they can sit around, write it down and keep a record. When you've had enough, take it to the Director of Nursing at the institute you are employed by. If you don't feel like you are being heard, please take it to your Board of Nursing in the state in which you are employed. I feel that I should not expect anything of anyone else that I should not expect from myself.

you are at the bottom of the nursing food chain...you get dumped on !!!

yes and no!! depends on which nurses you work with! as a nurse and a former cna i appreciate my nursing assistants and always there to lend a hand or two! they have the grunt work!!

I've been both a aid and an RN, so I've got a bit of both sides. I work in a major hospital on a very busy floor. I can think of one nurse that will treat her aid as little more then a step and fetch, but she treats the nurses the same way. We have all complained but it's a tight job market.

We have very defined roles for aids and nurses, spelled out in black and white. I will help if we get busy and they get behind, but I have yet to see the aids get called to another meeting because they had to stay over to finish. It is a common and demeaning meeting to be called in because you stayed over to help transport a code. My aids are around the clock at ten minutes before punch, and out at seven minutes early because the computer will let them. I can't respect that because it screws the oncoming shift aids that are in report and need coverage.

If I ask someone to get off their utube to do restock, or clean the unit, or get out the trash, or get blank form packets ready, you would think I had slapped their mama. It is stuff they could do as the dayshift aids have so much more to take care of.

The reality is that when an aid gets a high blood pressure they can chart it and tell me. When I get it, I have to do a med review, a history review, a chart review, a patient assessment, possibly call the doc for the med, process the med with pharmacy, confirm the med on the order, confirm the patient, give the med, assess for effectiveness within a time frame and chart everything I have done timed, dated, and in such a way that it stands up in court.

I have job security because no one else wants my job. An aid doesn't have that security because every nursing student, divorced mom looking for a new carrear, or refugee looking for a first job to build on will be paid while they train and certify at my hospital, with benefits. There are 5 in line for every tech we have.
