Is there any Certified Nursing Assistants that can help me?

I start my clinicals soon at a nursing home. Can any tell me about what to expect, or what experiences that they have had when they were a nursing assistant student? I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you!

I had clinicals in a nursing home, and it was a shock for me. I don't know how your program runs things, but what they did is partnered us up, and gave two people one resident to look after. If, after a day or two you felt comfortable, you could take on more.

My partner and I had someone that was total assist and on hospice. She had a hoyer lift and everything. I don't know why they thought I could handle it, because everyone else had people that were so much easier. The teacher told me I had the highest grade in the class, so I guess that is why they did that. It was a shock, though, just with how long it took two of us to get her ready, and caring for someone that was essentially half dead really took a toll on me emotionally. Plus when your on the job, you are responsible for 10+ residents individually. You also really realize how rushed it can be around meal times and in the early morning to get everyone to breakfast in time.

Yet it all gets done. The longer you work, the better you will become at time management. Teamwork is everything. Stick in there, it is a very rewarding experience, knowing you are helping someone. Also, as you do it, it will become easier. Enjoy the learning experience!

I'm not a cna, but I'm sure that you will do fine. Just make sure that you review class notes (and chapters) from the sessions and know about the human body and diseases in case your supervisor (or even a patient) asks a question or such. Perhaps you can practice transfers with either a family member or even a doll. And please remember to always look busy (as opposed to sitting in a chair with nothing in one's hands) if even reading a book related to nursing as it can really help a person to look more dedicated and motivated.

I just want to add to what the others have already have said. I have been a CNA in both the nursing home and hospital settings for over 16 years.
First, be confident in your abilities. The patients pick up very quickly on anyone's hesitancy when the are being cared for. If you have a question about the care of the patient, don't be afraid to ask other staff, or the patient themselves. There is also a plan of care that you have access to if you have questions.
You can expect not to know everything at first. Learn from your past experiences. Unfortunately that may mean to learn from your mistakes. Just be patient with the people you are taking care of. Soon after that you will learn time management which is a big part of your job. Make sure you listen to the patient and their needs. The more you communicate with the patient the better the relationship between the 2 of you will get.
Lastly, be yourself and show the patient that you care about them and your job. The quicker you get to know the patient the better your work days will be.
Good Luck!
