Can a nursing assistant perform wound care? |
This was for a patient that had a stage 4 decubitis ulcer on her foot who was diabetic. We allow our nursing assistants to do superficial wound care as in a new cut, abrasions, etc. If it is a deep wound as in a decubiti, the nurse needs to evaluate the size and depth and extent of healing and they usually do this kind of wound care themselves. no no and question the nurse that tells you to do it I am a former certified nurses'assistant & QMA,qualified medication aide, state of Indiana.Like the answer that JB? gave,a nurses'assistant can do new wound care,if it is not very deep, but usually if it is an old, large wound, especially if it is caused by diabetes,or is in an early gangenerous/gangrene stage, only a nurse or QMA,in states where they practice, are the only ones who can administer wound care to patients'.I have put a powder type of medication into severe bedsores, which are really gross & like a hole deep down to the bone. |
