I know art is not a good paying career (but i love art)should i major in something else?

i really enjoy making/creating art work such as sculpture and jewelry design.but lately i've been asked what is my major and i say fine art and they just come up with ....how come you don't go into nursing! what kind of bs is that!

from personal experience--- i've always loved art and been pretty good at it, but i never thought i would major in it. in HS i took all honors and ap classes and such and was considering going into math or engineering. however, the summer before senior year, i went to an art camp for 2 weeks and realized i would not be able to live w/ myself if i didn't go into art. it was/ is still hard for me whenever i introduce myself and tell people my major is fashion design right after my engineering or pre-med friends say their majors....i always feel like people assume i'm unintelligent--which is probably similar to what ur feeling when people ask why u aren't going into nursing. anyways....whenever i imagine what it would be like for me to be in engineering (or whatever) and see all of the art students carrying projects around campus, i know i would not be able to bear the fact that i would be sooooooo much happier doing art!!!
if art is what you love too, then do it!!!!! there's no point doing something you aren't passionate about just because you will earn more money.i'd much rather be poor and happy (though i don't plan on being poor:) than rich and unhappy with my day to day life.
ignore others who don't understand ur passions and just let them know that you are passionate about what you plan on majoring in!!!!
GOOD LUCK!! :)

Jewelry design? Maybe you should try to become an apprentice to a jewel smith. The guy who carves and polishes stones. I am not sure about demand, yet it is a high paying job and would compliment your desire to sculpt and design jewelry nicely.

Plus getting involved in the precious stone business would definitely help you on the business side when crafting pieces of art or if done correctly could fund your art work. Or maybe precious metal dealing and sculpting. Someone has to make those rings that artistic flare.

Don't do it! Persist with your art and, eventually, you will succeed. Try by starting to sell your creations on Ebay. I've bought tons of cool art, jewelry & DIY stuff on Ebay. Once you feel ready, look for a gallery to represent you.

I am in the same boat. I love art but I also have an interest in teaching. So I'm mixing the two and majoring in Art Education. As far as I know, a major like that would get you ready to teach all ages from Elementary school to High school or possibly college. This would give you the flexiblity to create the kind of art you're interested in and to get more experience in other types of art.

But even if you aren't interested in teaching, don't feel obligated to major in something that you know will make more money than an artist. If you choose something you're not passionate about then you could end up being unhappy later in life.

Follow your instincts.

The truth is, unless you major in something specific, like nursing, the majority of people who go to college never get a job in what their degree is in. I think if you love art go for it, you may be successful, you may also want a back up. If there is another subject you like think about minoring in it or majoring in it and getting a minor in art. And if you don't want to major in something else, than don't because chances are if you don't like the subject now, you probably still won't in four or five years when you're looking for a job. So although it may be easier to go into nursing and later get a job as a nurse, you probably won't be happy with you life or career if you do.

I'm majoring in Art History. Most people look at me crazy when I say that, but it opens a lot of doors. If you like art, you could consider it.

And you can still take art classes while your there. It's the best of both worlds

What it pays means nothing as long as you are happy with your job is what is important
