Is nursing a career or a vocation?

A vocation is your occupation. A career is spent in a field that you have made your life long occupation. Nursing therefor can be both your vocation and your career. But I think what you really mean is nursing is considered a profession. Professions are careers or vocations that require advanced specialized training. A brick layer might be called a tradesman for example while an nurse would be a professional. But don't get hung up on these labels, it's not written in stone.

It helps in a career if it is your vocation, too.

The dictionary defines "vocation" as:

A regular occupation, especially one for which a person is particularly suited or qualified.

I suppose if you are not suited for nursing work but you do it anyway, it would be a plain old job.

If you want to do nursing work your whole life, then it would be a career, but still you may not be suited for it.

Strange, huh?

nursing is a career, no doubt, once in you are stuck forever and ever. it is how you look at it. i think that it is a career and you can make the most of it, or you can just go from one day to the next. you choose.

Nursing is a career because it offers an opportunity to grow. With an ASN, one can be a practical nurse. With a BSN, one can be a RN. With a MSN, one can be a NP, nurse anesthetist, nurse manager, or nurse statistician and with a PHD, one can be the CNO of a major health care system.
