Cosmetology and nursing? what career is best??

im in 11th grade and im stuck i love make up but i will also love being a nurse ..i have to decide because if i want to be a nurse i want to start a cna program first but their is also cosmetology that every one says that it is fun and worth it but i am not sure can u tell me what is best?

I will encourage you to go into nursing. It is a great career and there are so many opportunities to advance with it. Getting your CNA early is a great idea because you can work in the hosp. as you are going to school and the hosp. will help pay for part of your tuition, and you will have medical ins. Not to mention that the nurses will help you when you have questions on your school work. You would be surprised at how needed nurses are and the schedule is awsome. You are a smart girl for thinking about your career now. Stay focused and follow through with your goal. Just remember you can always learn to do hair/ make up for fun.
Oh, ya working as a CNA will give you the opportunity to see what field of nursing you are most interested in. Good Luck!

If you like cosmetology more you can make WAY more money in that career...but nursing is a little more satisfying because you helps somebody be healthy, not look good. so it all depends on what you think. i would go nursing, but i'm not you :)

Im going into nursing. I love to work with ppl. The demand for nurses are at an all time high and they get paid very VERY well. (starting 23 an hour for a RN)

Well make-up may be a funner job to go with, but you may not make as much as going to nursing school. However, I am in the medical field, and it's a very stressful field. Way your options and do what you truely want. You still have 1 more year to think about it if you want to go straight to school.
Good luck hun!

I t is best to make a career of nursing there is always going to be sick people needing help

In the long run being a nurse is more lucrative has better benefits and more choices for career advancement. Cosmetology has become so competitive unless you make it really big nursing will pay much, much better.
Both are rewarding in their own way.

Omg I feel the same way about both! I think for a career tho, nursing is best. Great benefits, great education, and alot of green later on. haha. But if you're looking for fun then cosmetology would be fun. Ur decision! Good luck! ;)

Okay my advice would be to do nursing. There is nothing wrong with cosmetology, I just think that nursing is a steady more stable job. It is very easy to find a place to work and there are lots of possibilites. But nursing takes lots of dedication, so I would suggest seriously considering what you are getting into before starting nursing.

As there is very large demand for nurses, sign-on bonuses and benefits are great. There are many fields for nursing and the pay is consistenly increasing. Cosmetology could lead to many fun jobs with a varying pay scale. Just a suggestion- go into nursing and when you are settled, take up cosmetology on the side for added pleasure and income. Go with your heart and gut.

Any profession is an admirable one. Goo luck.

hmmm two totally diff jobs... Make a list.. get a piece of paper and draw 4 columns... pros for each occupation and cons for each and list everrything that you can think of. Both require you to work with people and stand in your feet for long periods of time...but think of the "ways" each work with people...can you handle changing bedpans..cleaning vomit and blood? Being around sick people all day? I truly admire nurses and doctors... I could not be one. Good luck

You can do both!

My best friend is a great nurse...who does make-up for wedding parties and fashion shows on her time off.

It doesn't have to be one or the other! :)

Good luck!

BTW
Never choose a career based on how much money you can make at it...especially Nursing.
Nursing may be a good career..but its a good career with people that have a calling for it. Ive met a lot of people that went into Nursing for the benefits, but have no business being there.

Make your lifes work, the work you love!

cosmetology school only takes 13 months do this first.
then go to nursing school while you work doing hair.
hair is a great fall back in carrear. its sort of recession proof beecause everyone needs a hc for interviews and back to school.ect that way you can figure this out for your self.

i do hair its really hard on the body, feet legs arms neck back.

Many nurses started as CNA's (see link below). This would give you the opportunity to see if you like patient care. But that being said, CNA's do the "grunt work" for the nurses. An RN with a degree has lots of flexibility as to where and when he or she will work and it is the more practical choice long term since celebrity hairdressers are few and far between.

But my mother and aunt were nurses and again, it wasn't ideal from their standpoint--short staffing, lots of turnover, lots of responsibility for very sick patients etc. They discouraged me from the field.

I got a hairdresser's license in high school and maintained for many years after. I worked my way through college and graduate school as a hairdresser and I always loved makeup too--still do. But the hairdressers I met in continuing education class did not want their children to do it. The hours on their feet were backbreaking and it was hard to make a living.

So, here's what I say. Go with your passion--hairdressing and makeup because you are so young. You will gain lifelong skills. You may be the next celebrity hairdresser. But don't give up on college--go become a nurse. If you like it--great. If you don't, you will have 2 great skills to help put yourself through graduate school.

Best of luck.

Nursing will pay much more, and there is a huge demand for nurses in today's healthcare fields (i.e. you can live anywhere and easily find a job, I have friends who move every couple of years [Hawaii, California, New York] and know that nursing will support them). There are also advanced nursing degrees with management potential (not so with cosmetology).
