For college students only?

whenever i have to talk to the undergraduate advisors of the nursing department i am in i get scared. It just makes me nervous whenever i have to talk to them about something because i don't want them to single me out(they have been known to be mean people), this is hard for me due to the fact that i have had to go to them for help(on things that are not really my fault, like registration problems) is this normal behavior to be afraid of advisors and professors, do other college kids feel this way?

It's normal to feel nervous around people you do not know and especially around people who have a perceived power over you...however they really are there to help you....even on the days when *they* are having a bad day from all the students that are having registration problems. Just smile when you go in...it might even brighten their day and make it better for you!!

you shouldn't be afraid of your advisors. They are there to help you.

yes, we see them as above us and they do have a higher than thou attitude.... it is common to be nervous... after all they are who we strive to emulate

I understand your problem totally. I hate going to my adviser for anything because he's completely evil. However, they are there to help you. So when I go to mine, I just sit quietly and get whatever is needed done. Many kids feels this way though. It's not totally the advisers fault though. They have to meet with thousands of students so their job can get pretty tough. As for your situation, just go in and get it done, and walk out. That's what I have to do.

Thats the way the biology department was at my college, and that is why I am now a chemistry major (well that plus the fact that chemistry is cooler than biology). If you don't intend on switching majors, you should talk to the other people in your department and see if they feel the same way. If they do, maybe you could try to present a unified front and go talk to the advisors. If everyone feels the same way, they can't argue that it is just one person complaining because they are lazy.

They are supposed to be there to help you not make you feel uncomfortable.

Where or not its normal, you should probably get used to it--as a nurse your probably going to have to deal with your share of "mean" administrators

You shouldn't be afraid of them. Think of it this way: they are there to help you and you pay to go to school there so technically you are paying them for their services. They are there to help and work for you.
