3 semesters of college, working for 6 years, and not happy. Need guidance.?

Did 3 semesters of college in Graphic Design.
Several personal/family problems resulted in me leaving the college.
Been in the work force for 6 years in a non-related field, and hating every minute of it. I'm in a job where I'm bored 60% of the time, I'm not learning anything new, I'm not engaging my brain like I want, or creating anything. But the pay is good and the benefits are fantastic.

Main point: I have no idea what I would go back to college for and I'm desperately trying to search for some idea as to what I would love and enjoy doing for the next 40 years. I live in South Dakota, so Agriculture and Pharmacy/Nursing are huge here. I don't like any of it.

I'll tell you what I do like: Video games, fantasy books, creating banners and icons for web pages, sketching every now and then, occassional painting and sculpting, making crocheted balnkets....very artsy, right-brained. I love taking pictures with a digital camera.

Where can I go for guidance?

You can go to an academic advisor at your college. Doesn't matter if you are currently enrolled or not.

If you have 3 semesters of graphic design, and you love video games, I'd say put those two things together and work on designing video games. It might not be a big market, but something you can look into. Not sure how likely it would be in South Dakota. Are you willing to move to suit the market?

Just an idea. Hope this helps.

Go back for graphic design, computer arts, illustration, or an art degree of some sort .. web design would be beneficial as well. Take a few business classes as well which can help if you decide to break out on your own.

Go to any schools in your area and try to get an appointment with a career counselor. Get a catalogue of their courses and investigate which ones look the most appealing to you. Once you decide what classes you'd like to take, you can investigate how to make those types of skills into a different career.

All those agricultural and pharmaceutical businesses need logos, brochures for their customers, web sites and the like .. you can be the one who proves that service for them! :)

You can take an interest inventory, which is probably offered by the career center of a college near you. There are online versions and books that you can buy, but I found that having a real person (usually a graduate student training to be a career counselor) to talk through the results with really helpful. They usually offer aptitude tests as well, so you could go that route or do both. When I did it, about 5 years ago, it wasn't expensive. I didn't go out and find the perfect job immediately or anything like that, but it put me on the path toward what I do now, which I love. I also found doing volunteer work helpful, when I could find something at least similar to what I thought I might want to do. It gave me something close to a real-world experience and helped me narrow down the choices. Good Luck!

  • Does the name of the school (for nursing) matter for job prospects?

Nope, not generally. What matters most is that you passed your licensure exam to earn your RN. As long as your school has a nursing program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, you're fine.
