Hard to get into RN program at community college?

Hello, I am in college right now and I'm interested in switching my major to nursing. The only problem is that it's so tough now to get into the BSN program and I don't think I'll make it because my GPA is a little low. How hard is it to get into a program at the community college level?

Because of the demand in nursing, your GPA and testing abilities are key to get into any nursing program where I live. They do not have waiting lists any more, and they have increased the prerequisits in order to weed out students who are not serious. I live with 4 local community college with in a 50 mile radius. I have taken science classes with people who are looking to get into thier nursing programs- these students are jumping through hoops and dealing with ever-changing requirements. If they change schools and go to a private university for the BSN- the requirements do not get any easier.

In my last class, microbiology, one of my classmates was in tears because she only needed micro to get into the RN program- but she got a C. She was devistated.

I am looking at the dental hygiene program and my prospects are no easier then if I changed and decided to get an RN. Only one of the community colleges offers this program, so the applications are lower in number, but the acceptance is even harder- I'm up against 6 community college that have a cooperative agreement with this school. Out of 150+ applicants, only 36 get accepted. There is only one program per year and if I don't get in I will have to reapply next year. In these same schools (6 community colleges), the nursing program starts in both the spring and the fall to accomadate the higher demand, but they have 350+ students apply each session and only accept 90 per session.

If I were you I would get in and talk to a counselor some schools look more at testing; NCLEX, while others look more at your entrance testing scores and your GPA.

It depends on the area. Out here, I know that the BSN programs are extremely competitive and that you must have a high GPA, but there's no waiting list, you either get in or you don't. The community college programs are almost as competitive, but they have a long waiting list. I know several people that were on the waiting list for the RN program at the local community college for so long that they earned another degree because they were on the list, taking classes, for over 4 years. It may be different where you live, however. I'd try to talk to someone that's in the program or on the waiting list.

This is the best advice that I can give if your thinking of nursing then go to a vocational school like BOCES here in NYC or just go to a four year school and once you do your pre-req's you can convert to the RN program automatically..................GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
