Should i still continue with nursing?

i have scoliosis with a 30 something curve. at least that's what i remember last time when i went for a check up. i wear a body brace every night but i'm supposed to wear it like 23 hours a day. but i can't because i go to college and i've taken up nursing as my course. but the problem is, i know the scoliosis progresses and i know in the long run, i probably won't have that much time with my therapy and exercises, much less wear the brace, once i start having my hospital rounds. plus stress and being tired makes my back ache even more.
my family's saving up for surgery, which probably won't happen any time soon, but we're all still hoping for the best.
the question is, do i still continue with nursing even with my back problem??

I'm sorry to hear of your condition. I was an RN for 15 years before moving on to being in business with my brother. It's a tough profession and there are physical challenges to the job that I'm not sure would be good for your condition. Have you thought about getting into other areas of medicine that are not so physically challenging? I get a sense that you would be a great addition to the field. Perhaps a Lab or Radiology tech? There are so many fields in medicine. Please research them before making a committment to Nursing, and good luck in whatever you decide.

If you can get through school, there are jobs you can do where you can sit, such as telephone triage or research (which is what I do), or grave shift psychiatric.

Please fit in as much of your therapy and exercises and brace as you can, and talk to your doctor about what you want to do; he or she will have a much better idea of what you are capable of.

Continue my dear only thing u need to do is limit or avoid activities that will strain u . you need the knowledge , who to tell, you can/will get a position in the hospital where u can do more supervising or management. and its hard. but learn to say no sometimes.

if its what you want, then yes go for it. dont give up because of your back problems because in the future your going to wish you did it. at least just try, and if it doesnt work you can quit, but you will know that you tried.

As a massage therapist, I have to tell you: I have NOT seen back surgeries for scoliosis be the treatment of first choice. Before you sign that consent form on the bottom line, please research and try Network Chiropractic, the Bowen Technique, acupuncture and an intense yoga practice. It IS possible (and far, far less invasive) to change the structure of the bones and of the body without surgery.

The field of nursing is very very specialized. Once you get through school you can try to focus in on an aspect of nursing that will take your potential physical limitations into consideration. Especially if you continue with school and get a Master's Degree.

You can do research work, you can do training and education, you can become a "psychiatric nurse practitioner" and work with outpatient counseling from a wheel chair. You could do disability counseling. I guess the point I am trying to make is...you don't have to do the work that involves lifting heavy patients. You could also work in Neonatal Intensive Care....the average weight of your patient would be 5 lbs max. You should wear your brace more than you are...be a compliant patient!

That is my best answer!
