How long does a neonatal nurse have to attend college?

How long does a neonatal nurse have to attend college?

All nurses graduate with the same education (at each degree level, meaning all AA's the same, all BSN's the same) regardless of which field of nursing they want to go into. The training to become a NICU nurse is done on the job, after graduation.

You can get an RN license with an AA degree at a community college, which is supposed to be a 2 year program, but takes most nurses longer because of the difficulty of classes and all the prerequisites. Very few NICU's will hire a nurse straight out of nursing school (regardless of AA or BSN) unless you have done an internship with them the summer prior to graduation. Most small NICU's won't train nurses. To get the training (especially good training) you need to go to a bigger NICU. There are 3 levels of NICU care, if the NICU is too small they will not be able to train you to be a level 3 nurse (to work with ventilators).

To train to be a level 3 NICU nurse, most places give you 10 to 12 weeks of training with a preceptor before they have you work alone.

Most neonatal nurses are RN's which means a 4-year BSN degree. If you want to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, that's an additional year or two.
