Where can I find free money for college or nursing school.?

I am currently tring to help a young lady who is graduating from high school this year find money for school. She wants to go to nursing school. She has already applied for the staford loan and the pell grant but she is still about $7000.00 short. She is a now "A, B" student but has a C average. Does anyone know of any goverment programs or anything that could help her. She is a ward of the court with no income.

There are two sources for student loans -- the federal government and private lenders. In order to obtain most federal student loans, you will first need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In most<!--instances the FAFSA is required for all federal financial aid including federal student loans. Deferment options are available while you are still attending school at least half-time. There are four main federal loan programs.

Federal loan consolidation is for students who are in repayment status or parents who wish to extend the repayment period on their current PLUS and obtain a fixed interest rate for the life of the loan-->you can combine all of your eligible federal student loans into one loan with a Federal Consolidation Loan. Consolidating also locks the interest rate you pay on your loan.

edit aslo fill out the fasfa form and talk to her school guidence counselor if she has her school picked out and is enrolled she can also seek assistance from thier financial aide department.

search on the internet for scholarships..they have alot for people who want to work in the medical field

Talk to the local hospitals in her area! Most hospitals will pay for your schooling if you agree to work for them after you complete your schooling.

Also, talk with Home health agencies in your area.

There are tons of scholarships for nursing do a search on the internet.

First she needs to check with the financial aid office at the school she wants to attend to be sure she is being classified as an independent student she is a ward of the court. If they are counting her as an independent studnet then she should be getting $4731 on a PELL grant and $7500 in Federal Stafford Loans, which totals 12,231.

She should ask the financial aid office if they can give her a Federal Perkins Loan. A Perkins loan will be forgiven for someone working as a full-time nurse after they graduate. She can also ask them if they have any SEOG grant money they can give her. She can also ask them if she qualfies for any state grant funds.

Next I would advise her to check with hospitals, they often offer scholarships in exchange for the student signing a contract to agree to work for them after you graduate.

Also have her check with the local employment (unemployment) office to see if they have any programs, such as WIA, workforce investment act.

Since she is a ward of the court, she should have a counselor through the state. Many states give grant money to students who are wards of the court.

Good luck!
