What should I do about my child getting 2nd degree burns at school and not being contacted?

It's been extremely hot here in IN for about a month now so they have been dismissing school early and such. They are however letting kids still go outside on recess and play on metal playground equip. Even after a story in Louisville, ky did a test to see what the the temp of metal is on a 95-105degree day. plastic was 120 and metal was 148. my daughter was playing on the monkey bars when it was 95 degrees out side and received 2nd degree burns. she went to the nurse, and the nurse rinses her hands with water then pours PEROXIDE ON BUSTED OPEN BURN BLISTERS! she said that there was dirt, but she neglected to use soap with the water to wash the dirt out.........DUH. they didn't even bother to call us. and they can't understand why i'm upset. they shouldn't have been out in that heat anyway and if they were they shouldn't have been allowed on metal equipment. she is only 7 and hasn't really put together (until now) that if it's so hot outside everything else is hotter

I just emailed the elementary school principale along with the super. I also emailed the super pictures of both hands. The size of the burns are not huge. one is the about the size a nickle and the others about the size of a penny. One of the blisters did not pop, there were a total of 4 blisters on her hands.

Whenever your child is at school, it is the school's responsibility to see that you child is safe in every way within their control. I would say that being on the monkey bars is within that guideline enough that your child should never have received those burns! I would contact the school board and voice a formal complaint if I were you. Let the county superintendent know about the injury and the seriousness of it too. Second degree burns are nothing to scoff at and can get infected easily, not to mention the pain and suffering by your child. I think it was purely negligent of them to have allowed your child to be injured in such a way as this. It certainly could have and should have been avoided. Voice your opinion loudly at the super's office. At the very least, the school should be paying for any doctor bills that you might incur! Good luck and go get 'em, Mom!

You might want to get the opinion of an attorney to go with this. Legal aid is usually a free agency. No matter how small the burns, burns really hurt! Try to cause better awareness that will protect your child and others from this type of slack, inexcusable situation for all time! Report It

IF all you do is send angry emails to people at the school and the school district..it WILL happen again. They see no need to rectify the situation. It's contributory negligence on the part of the school, pure negligence on part of nurse. Seek advice from personal injury attorney. Report It

raise hell with any and everybody. her teacher, her principle, the school board. take pictures!!

First, contact a doctor to make sure that everything is treated correctly. Then Contact an attorney. Pull your child out of that school and put her someplace else. That is neglect.

Since you have already spoken with the school about it, the next step is to speak to the superintendent of schools. If it were me, I would get a lawyer. Not that I am the type of person who would sue, but you know what? What they did was wrong. They didn't contact you when something went seriously wrong with your daughter, and they should have. You left your daughter in their care with the hope and trust that she would be safe and they violated that right. That is terrible and I hope she feels better.

Sue the stupid school district AND the school nurse! They will settle out of court so ask for a hiney load of money. That is negligence at its finest! Get or save the note from the doctor that states what type of burns she received. You should have asked the nurse to go outside, swing from the monkey bars until she received 2nd degree burns, then pour peroxide on HER hands.....I bet she'd back down from that!

When they settle (and I know that they will) have it also in the judgment in your favor that school playground equipment is to be covered by awnings to reduce the possibility that this happens again! Do not remove your child from that school if you sue the school district, this could affect your case. But if your attorney advises so....then do so!
