Can nurses RN apply to pharmacy school with a BSN degree?

im curious, if you have a bachelors of sciense in nursing are you eligible to apply to pharmacy or even medical school?

Eligibility to apply to pharmacy school or med school depends if that person has taken all the required courses that med schools or pharm schools want. The major or degree doesn't matter. It's whether they took those courses or not.

Go look up the admissions page of the med school or pharm school you're interested in. Look for their requirements. You'll find a list of courses. If you've taken all those courses, then you can apply. If you haven't, then you need to go take those courses you're missing.

Despite what Josh A said, you really need to check each pharm school's website to see their particular list of courses. They're not all the same. Many have minor differences. A common example is for a pharm school to require a public speaking course.

I don't know, but I'd imagine you are more acceptable than the next person. A BSN is a difficult degree to obtain and opens up many doors for your future. Congrats!!

Yes, you can. The major doesn't matter, just that you took all the prereq's for pharmacy school which are:
-1 year bio
-1 year organic chem
-1 year inorganic chem
-1 year physics
-1 year calc

These are also the same for med school.

As long as you have the pre-reqs done, and have some pharmacy experience then you should be okay. Go to http://www.getintopharmacyschool.com for more information about getting into pharmacy school!

RNs/BSNs are certainly welcome to apply to pharmacy school. One of my professors was an RN/BSN before he decided to go back to school to get his PharmD. As mentioned by several other responders, the degree is not as important as the completion of necessary pre-requisite classes. Something important to consider is that the prereqs for nursing school, although there is an appreciable amount of overlap, are not always of the same rigor. So it is critical that you evaluate the prereqs of any potential pharmacy school you are considering. For example, pharmacy schools typically require one semester of calculus, whereas nursing schools typically only require college algebra for the mathematics prereq. As with other degrees, merely having a degree doesn't exempt you from the need to have excellent grades. Your acceptance into nursing school indicates that your grades were at least good.

In addition to potential classes many pharmacy schools require the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) for entry. If it's been awhile since you took your undergraduate science and math courses it could potentially make this exam more challenging. (Information about the PCAT can be found here: www.pcatweb.info)

Something else to consider is that if your undergraduate work was significantly distant in the past (perhaps 7-10 years ago depending on the pharmacy program) you may be required to retake those courses for them to count.

Unfortunately the chances are that you will probably have to complete additional coursework prior to applying for pharmacy school. As far as medical school goes, the admission requirements are simiar, but will probably require even more coursework and taking of the MCAT. If this is the case, working on the side as an RN certainly pays better than most other jobs pre-pharmacy students take. All that aside, having a BSN and clinical experience as a nurse will certainly be an advantage if you apply to pharmacy school. Good luck!
