Topping up to a degree from advanced diploma?

Has anyone done this? im doing the advanced diploma in nursing and im hoping to swap to the degree in the final year, however there are limited spaces each year and im thinking of other options.
Im thinking of applying to med school after and i need a degree to do it? however i have been told that doing the top up doesnt really give you an official degree? i cant find anything online to back this up anyone know?

Im at uni, and a top up is where you add some more units to your existing qualification to 'top up' to a degree, for example the advanced diploma is 120 credits in the first 2 years and 60 in the final, but the degree is 120 in all three, so you just do the extra assignments to get the credits.

I've never heard of a "Top Up" which school do you go to?
