Nursing School?...What has your experience been?

Hello All, I am thinking about going to Nursing School. I already have my degree in Journalism but want more job stability. My mom is a nurse practitioner so I've seen the benefits of nursing. Can anyone tell me what their experience through nursing school was like as well as what it is like when you first graduate. Also, what can I expect. Thanks in advance/

I havent graduated yet but I am enjoying Nursing school. I got my degree in Biology first and then did this - its totally different because you're out there working. I work in trauma for the last month I've been there - and then I go back to university for a short time and then go back to the hospital in a different ward. I think it's great - but a little gruesome at times, though I can handle it!

I am currently studying to be an RN.

Expect a lot of work. Depending on the program you take, expect a lot of clinical hours as well (hands on) which is even more intense but I learn better that way, anyways. A lot of memorization, a lot of writing, a lot of pressure.

When you get out, a very well respected, rewarding career that you can take anywhere. Do it because you want to though, not for the prospects, or the duties involved will eventually get to you.

Long hours (8-12 hour clinical days) and lots of studying. It gets easier once you have a good grip on the fundamentals of nursing stuff and on NCLEX style questions. Until then, you feel COMPLETELY lost. Trust me...just about everyone I know in nursing has felt overwhelmed, in over their head, and like they haven't learned anything. We're all okay now...but it is very stressful at first.

I've been pushed to my limits by nursing school, and I'm so glad to be done in May. It has, however, been a rewarding experience...you really have to earn that BSN.

Hopefully you can get into an accelerated nursing program since you already have a degree. I worked full time while I attended nursing school. It was hard but well worth the time. You will go through orientation when you graduate. As you know with your mother being a np nursing is a great rewarding career.
