What prospects do people with B.sc nursing degrees have?

do they really get jobs or good opportunities, or is it better to just study microbiology?. Please help, am going into the university and cant seem to decide on which of these to study.

There's a worldwide nursing shortage going on in case you didn't know that, so your chances of employment with a bachelor degree are much greater as a nurse than you would have with a B.S. in Microbiology (although you could find lab jobs with that degree without a doubt).

Hospitals offer very attractive incentives to recruit and retain nurses, especially those with their BSN -- recruitment bonuses that vary anywhere from a few thousand dollars to as much as $20,000 for a new hire critical care nurse with experience for example, relocation assistance, child care, sometimes even housing assistance plans....

And with a BSN your choices about where you chose to work, what hours, what type of specialty area are pretty wide open.

The U.S. Dept. of Labor estimates that there will be a shortage of at least 600,000 plus nurses within this decade alone..... so you'll never have difficulty finding good work and growing opportunities to ask more from your employers when you job shop.

You'll have opportunities you would never have with a BS in Micro-- BUT-- being an RN is NOT easy, and you really have to have a desire to do it. I would never suggest anyone go into nursing unless they had a genuine desire to care for their patients and make a difference because you have to in this profession, this is not just a "job" -- know what I mean?

In developing countries, the prospects are not very good.BUT in developed countries like canada, uk and america, the prospects are so good that people who have worked for years in other fields change thier courses to nursing so as to hinge on the success of the field. I will advise you to study nursing

Well in Canada I know they are DYING for nurses and you have to have your B. Sc. as of this year in order to be an RN. (Only needed a college diploma till now) However, while they are trying hard to recruit nurses, it seems like no one is willing to hire them under a "full-time" premise so that they don't have to pay for benefits which I think is a total and complete crock. Microbiology might be a good idea because then you could be more diverse on your career choices. GOOD LUCK!!!
