Is nursing the way to go money wise?

I am a personal trainer and I am going for my nursing degree. I know nurses are high in demand and are getting paid pretty well but I've heard variations on yearly salary. What would a part-time nurse usually make in a year?

That depends on the hours and if you are a LPN or an RN. Figure an LPN to be $25-35 per hour depending on what part of the country you're in. You can also go to http://salary.com and figure area specific wages.

Nursing isn't a job you go into for the money. If you are only into the job for money, I would recommend stripping.

Nurses get paid nicely, but I don't know any nurse that does it only for the check.

Nurses are paid well but it is a demanding job. When you start out you have to work second or third shift and you will always have to work holidays and weekends. The doctors treat you like you are stupid and most of the patients treat you horribly because they are sick, in pain and miserable.

On the plus side, it is a meaningful job and you are truly helping people. I have a chronic health problem and I remember every good nurse I have had during hospital stays and they were truly angels of mercy.

In my part of the U.S (Midwest), RN's are given a signing bonus of $2500 - $5000 and paid $25-$35 per hour based on experience and shift worked (third shift gets paid the most). The more education you have the more you get paid. Nurses with an associates degree and an RN get paid less than nurses with a bachelors degree and an RN. Don't bother with an LPN. Most hospital don't pay them anymore than a nurse's aide.

I have to agree with those who said: Do NOT go into nursing for the money! You will be miserable, your patient's will miserable, and you will have wasted your money on an education because I can guarentee by the time you hit the 5 year mark you are burned out and long gone.

That being said - the salary varies depending on where you work and how you work it. I have been agency/ per diem for most of the past 5 years - and the money is awesome. (Downside - no benefits, holiday pay, or guarenteed work). As an agency nurse I have made up to $55/ hour. Staff nurses generally make $25-35 per hour - with shift differentials and weekend only plans available at higher rates.
