Will the nursing board allow someone to obtain a degree in nursing with a DWI on your criminal record?

got a DWI four years ago and interested in becoming a registered nurse. Will my DWI conviction stop me from obtaining a degree in nursing

G'day Cnice,

Thanks for your question.

It depends on the licensing regulations for nursing in your locality.
However, it seems that you might have problems depending on where you are. States such as New York require nurses to be of "good moral character".

n California, the Board of Registered Nurses advises:" The BRN reviews all prior convictions substantially related to the qualifications, functions or duties of a registered nurse. Each application is evaluated on a case by case basis. (Please refer to the Policy Statement on Denial of Licensure.) The BRN considers the nature, severity, and recency of the offenses, as well as rehabilitation and other factors. The Board cannot make a determination for approval or denial of licensure without evaluating the entire application and supporting documentation."

In Massachusetts, you can lose your license as a nurse if convicted of DWI.

You need to be honest and report it so it can be considered. You may want to speak with the relevant Nursing Board in your area.

It would also be useful to know which jurisdiction you live in to provide a more specific answer.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards
