Biology to nursing degree?

I majored in biology because I wanted to be a doctor, however now my plans are not going the way I wanted and I was thinking about going to nursing school. Do I have to start all over to become or nurse or since I already have a bachelors degree in biology can I just go to nursing school without having to get a nursing degree?

You should look for schools that offer an "accelerated BSN" program. In order to be a nurse, you need to earn a degree. Since you hold a bachelor's degree already, you won't need anything other than nursing courses, and it will take about 2 years (full time). You might need to take some bio and chem pre-reqs though, if you haven't taken them in more than 5 or 7 years - nursing schools have limitations on these. You might ask about a "test out" option for these courses, since you probably know much of the material.

In most areas, nursing programs require that you complete prerequisite courses prior to admittance to the program. Some of your biology courses will doubtless be applicable.

You're halfway there, there's a lot of schools with a 1 yr. (or less) program for those that already have a bachelors in a related field. Good luck!

It may vary in different countries,but I can say you can start nursing school if you are a biology bachelor.

I think it would depend on where you went to nursing school. You could look at the prerequisites for nursing school. They may have very similar requirements as did your biology degree. There also may be a few classes that you haven't taken yet that would be required. My suggestion is to look at the school you plan on going to and talk to someone there about what classes are required. If you have already taken those then you would be able to just apply to nursing school. If you haven't taken all the courses required then you would have to take them before applying to nursing school.

There are a lot of nursing schools that do not require or end up with a degree. These usually take 2 to 3 years. With you major, you probably have all the prerequisites for nursing school, except maybe Sociology, Child Psychology, and Statistics. I'm assuming you already took Microbiology. Best thing to do is start applying now. It's most likely too late for spring admission, but you might be able to make it into the summer session, or at least next fall. And apply to a lot of schools, because they all have more applicants than they can choose.

It's a great thing that you majored in Biology since it is so close to anatomy. You will need to contact nursing programs and find out the pre-requisite courses you will need before you can attend. Chances are since you have a BA in Biology you have just about everything covered, but you will need to double check because there may be psychology, physiology, and other such courses that you have not taken. Contact a program and find out about it. Nursing schools usually have long waiting lists, and are very competitive, so if you've got an excellent GPA it's a bonus! Good luck with your career!

That is great that you have a BS in Biology and want to continue in the health care industry (even though you don't want to be a doc). There are some universities out there that have an entry level master's degree program in Nursing. Therefore, you can have a master's degree and a nursing license in one!
