Why did you become a teacher?

I'm taking a personal survey...I have a theory that teaching/education sort of "runs in a family". My mopm was the school sectretary, and my dad was VERY involved in the school. my summers were spent at the school helping the other teachers tear down or set up their rooms. In my husband's family, there are 4 teachers and the rest are nurses!When I asked people that I student taught under, most answers I got were "my mom was a teacher"...I have heard other stories about "I got married too young" or "this is my second profession b/c the first one was a mistake"...those answers are fine too...I just wanna get a percentage or something just to see how much this stuff runs in the family.

I do think it runs in the family. My mom earned her education degree, one of my sisters was a teacher for 11 years, three of my cousins and one aunt are teachers, one cousin is a teacher's aide, and my other sister and I have substituted. And I'm now going to school to be a teacher.

I've wanted to be a teacher my entire life.

I could say that "it runs in the family" also. My grandmother taught Biology for 36 years, my father is a US History teacher at Virginia Beach, and my mother is a Elementary school administrator.
I have always wanted to teach high school for as long as I can remember. I teach Chemistry and Physics at the local high school.

The money was good.I used to admire my primary school teacher in the way he made me learn stuff in school and I wanted to do the same for other children. Also people looked up to teachers in my society to do other things for their community.

but it has to start somewhere.
so it could just be what you want to do.

Well.. my Dad did not finish High School - my Mom did but no college.
It is just who I am - it is not like work for me (although I spend a great time of time and effort with it).
I got into ed. classes my Senior year in college, was chosen to be in a paid intern program to student teach but gave it all up when I found out teachers were earning $18,000 a year and I had a young family.
25 years later after a divorce I dated a teacher and went back to Ed. school. 4 more years I am married to that teacher and have a teaching credential and a Master's
- it is family if your wife counts!
Now my daughter is at a University in the teaching program, and a second daughter at a community college wants to teach as well.

Not for me; No one else in my own family is a teacher and growing up I thought being a teacher would be one of the worst jobs in the world (putting up with bratty kids that didn't want to be there like my classes always were). However I ended up a teacher as an adult and couldn't imagine myself doing anything else! Oddly enough my sister-in-law is also a teacher.
