Have you or someone you know ever been discouraged from applying for a job because of your gender?

Other than surrogate mother, sperm and ovary donar, and nurse maid, have you been discouraged from applying for a job because of your gender?

In one of my first encounters with Corporate America, I was told by my manager not to apply for jobs one step above mine or for assistant manager positions, because "women don't do those jobs". I had a college education and the assistant manager's had a high school education. For many of us, this was our first job (I had had other positions). Physical labor was minimal. My manager said it when no one was around, so it was his word against mine. Ever happen to you or anyone you personally know?

I was discouraged by all my friends and family not to work at Hooters. They told me that no men should be waiters there!! Can you believe this?

i wanted to work at a topless bar but they said my hooters had to much hair on them

No, but I've been told that someone as young as I am shouldn't apply for certain jobs, even though I'm in my early 20's, college-educated, and more than qualified.

Every gender has equal rights in this dynamic world, don't loose your heart and keep searching the job. To be a woman is not a crime, job opportunity is available for every one the main thing is the competency or capability how you suit for the job you apply. Increase your skill and don't see or think for any nasty people who gives a nonsense remarks, this is the life, at the stage you will get a lot of people with different taste and thinking so don't be discouraged and keep continue to kill the stupid who ever comes before you. Why only assistant manager a lot of more opportunity which will suit to your education and your talents, your academic studies and further training will enhance and add value in your experience. so also do a parallel courses for good opening.

I was interested in joining the police force in the city I was living in at that time, but I was discouraged not only because I am female, but because I am Black. (This was a predominantly White city). Unfortunately, I listened. I think it's pretty ignorant that people are still on this "you're just a girl" BS.

I'm female, and i had career counselors telling me that i should not go into engineering. that i was so smart, i should be an executive secretary.

YEP. I was discouraged when I applied to be a security guard at a closed facility.

The guy who interviewed me told me he didn't think I was "strong enough" due to my small frame.

Yeah, people I know at Wal-Mart were.

Stop Whining. If you want the job, go for it. The door is open for most women.

There is always someone to discourage you in some way or other. A million different ways. Just assert yourself and stop crying about sexist men.

I became a groundskeeper at a major institution--was the only female there. The crap I had to deal with was unreal. I got all the hardest jobs so I could "prove" myself. That was really stressful. I've not been discouraged from applying for or getting a job due to being female, but I have been discriminated against because I'm white. I was told that I couldn't work for a particular agency because I'm white. And I was waaaay more qualified than anyone there. In the "helping field" in Canada, that is definitely an issue, and there's virtually nothing that can be done about it. People don't actually say anything when anyone else is around, and they always find another reason for their paperwork, but it's very clear why people aren't being hired. There's a lot of hidden discrimination going on.
