5 year old son approved for SSI : Dedicated Account?

My son got approved for SSI that I applied for back in March. He will get all the money that he was due back until March in a "Dedicated Account" that I can use only for:

*Medical treatment, education, job training

*Items and services related to the child's impairment such as:

*Personal needs assistance (In-home nursing care)
*Special equipment
*Housing modifications
*Therapy or rehabilitation

He has free health insurance and therapy already so he does not need that. He has a voucher for day care already also. I am mostly wondering what special equipment, or housing modifications I could have covered? How do they relate to his disability?

Thank you....and please do not judge me for the type of parent I am to have a child with a diagnosis. I have had enough criticism. He DOES have bipolar...we have a family history. Unless you have been here you do not know what it is like to raise a child like this so please do not judge me but please help!

Why don't you ask them what special equipment would be covered? Or, check with a support group of families dealing with someone who is bipolar and see if any of them know what things would count for this. One thing I would consider is care of him periodically to give you a break. See if that is covered. I think it would be difficult to hire a regular baby sitter. Lots of luck.

I have a step son who has CP and is on SSI.
I am not sure what special equipment or housing modifications your son might require.
You should talk to a SSI representative, they can answer all of your questions.
This is not an easy situation and I wish you much luck.

A 5 year old with bipolar disorder? Perhaps you should get a second and third opinion. That sounds a little far fetched.
