Should I change my major? |
Right now im in my junior year of college. Ever since i was a freshmen in college, my major has been elementary education to be a teacher. Everyone in my family went to college to be a doctor. My dad and two older brothers are surgeons. My grandfather is a neurologist. My grandmother is a nurse. and My mom is a pediatrician. and My current boyfriend is in medical school to be a doctor as well. I feel so left out sometimes because they all have that in common with each other. And being a teacher pales in comparison to everyone else. So im wondering should i change my major into nursing. Should I? And please dont say something about my grammer because im not paying attention to grammer right now. no, i think you should not change your major at all unless nursing really does interests you. i have been told by many to choose what you like when you enter college. your friends' and family's careers are very good and i bet that they love their jobs. but whats wrong with being a teacher?! personally, i think that being a teacher is the best profession anyone can be but who am i to say since i too want to be a doctor. and, what your friends and family choose as a career can only be just for them and not for you. well, what i am trying to say is that if you really want to change majors because you like that better, then go ahead and do it; but that choice is up to you! if you want to be a teacher, be a teacher. it's an honorable profession! If you think you'll be happier teaching than you would being a nurse, then you shouldn't change your major. That's the bottom line. In my opinion there's nothing worse than spending three years in college, deciding to change your major, spending another four, and then deciding that you would rather not have changed at all. Well unless you like what your doing dont change your major to be like everyone else. I think if you want to change your major to be like the rest of your family is wrong!Just do what you like doing best. being a teacher is a strong influence like a doctor because your helping young people learn. I think its interesting being a teacher its still a good job. If you enjoy nursing better and your courses will work out, go ahead and switch. But don't do it because you feel like you should be in the same field as the people close to you. I don't think you can really compare medicine and teaching like that, they are both very important. And remember that variety is good-- you would definitely add something new to the mix of you were a teacher among a bunch of medical professionals ;0) I can sympathize. I come from a family heavily into the sciences and I happen to be much more interested in the humanities. It sounds like you choose a major that interested you, so stick with it. Enjoy being different from the rest of your family. Whether they say it or not they'd rather you were happy than just like them. (And if that's not the case, then don't let their opinion bother you.) If you feel left out when they have conversations about medicine, do some reading on the subject or take a class just to learn more about it, without the intention of changing majors. Or ask questions about what they're talking about. You can share in their interests and introduce them to yours rather than feeling like you are an outsider. Diversity in a family is what makes it interesting. If at some point the idea of being a nurse is as attractive to you as being a teacher, then you can always go back to school. Stick with what you are doing now. Best of luck. |
