Biotech/pharma people: I am going back to college...?

...I have a Master's degree in another field, and plan to pursue either 1) nursing or 2) engineering. Both appeal to me and I plan to use the education and subsequent license strictly for work in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, namely research.

Which degree is more valuable, in YOUR OPINION?

Nursing degree will help you do clinical trials, engineering would help in manufacturing at a large biotech/pharma.

A bachelor's or master's in biology, chemistry, pharmacy, statistics is needed for research. PhD is not worth the trouble if you are going to work in industry. I am not aware of any nursing or engineering degree holders working in biotech/pharma research. However, if you work for a company that makes medical devices or medical nanotechnology, engineering degree would help.

Nursing is also a good choice because even if you don't work for a biotech/pharma clinical research/trials, you can always work in healthcare. We have a shortage of nursing personnel, and future demand is high due to aging population living longer.

I work in pharma. Of the two you mentioned I think engineering might be the most useful especially if you get into process research. In all my years in the industry the only nurses I saw were in the employee health clinic. If you want to be in research choose chemistry, molecular biology, or pharmacology. Do not get a degree higher than MS if you want to be in research. PhD are having a difficult time finding employment especially if they have experience. MS and BS scientists are still finding jobs. It is still tough especially with all the outsourcing to China and India. Best of luck
