Anyone had the same experience?

At first, I absolutely loathed and despised my course which is nursing, but my mother is the one paying for my education and this is the course that she wants me to take. Sigh, what can a passive guy like me do? Eventually, I came to the realization that I am stuck here for four more years and I finally decided the hell with it, I'm going to finish this shite course (no offense intended to nurses) and get over it. Who would have thought that I will slowly come to love this tedious and very meticulous occupation?

Well this is my problem (sorry for the lengthy drama above). All is going fine and dandy with my studies and I'm already halfway finishing this course when suddenly, like a ray of light permeating a dark room, I suddenly lost all my drive and zest to study. Call it stupidity, laziness, depression, psychosis whatever etc. but it just happened. Just like that. I started to cut classes, fail my exams and flunk my subjects.

Pls. help me find ways to get back on track somebody!

Its a long time to study and can be very disheartening, but all you have to remember is that you only now have halfway to go.

I felt like that after the second year of my 5 year degree - it seemed that the 4years I had left was a huge amount of time and was so far away I almost felt like giving up. I just thought I could be doing something better in that 4 years if I wasnt studying, but then I thought about 'what was better', it wouldnt have been hard for me to get a job but it would have been a meaningless and unthanking job that I more than likely wouldnt enjoy as I wanted to be what I was studying for and also, without a degree it was more than likely I would end up with a rubbishly paid job aswell.

I just had to get myself into focus and remember that when you look back to what you were doing 4 years ago, it only seems like yesterday and to be honest, I was in my 20s 4 years ago and I honestly don't know where the time has gone.

I also had to look at the countries I could travel to and the different things I can use my degree in - and realised that I wanted to emmigrate to Australia and my degree is my key into that country, unless I win the lottery!!!

My biggest fear is regret - I would hate to look back on my life and be filled with regret - you only get one life so you really have to make it the best life you can.
I still look back and regret not taking my A levels - I was in such a rush to move out of home and be independant that halfway through them I dropped out (I was doing really well aswell - but got a bit like you and lost my motivation, but my parents told me I had to get a job if I wasnt studying so I did and moved out (hated living at home then - although looking back, I never realised how good I had it!!!)
But I spent years in boring, tedious, rubbish administration jobs wasting my life, achieving nothing with no career prospects - what a waste - that bites me everytime when I think about that!!!!

Stop mopping, your wasting a valuable opportunity!!

Looking back with regret is the worst thing in the world!!!

Many people do their first course at whatever, finish it work for a while then do another course perhaps at night or whatever. It always look good it u can finish a course at a young age. It shows you have what it takes.
Go to a doctor and get some anti depressants or whatever they prescribe.
Nursing would be fun but I have a fear of blood plus I am too stupid to do that course.

So see a vocational counselor and find out what you really want to study already! Nothing in your question convinces me you really came to love this program. Why waste your time and your mother's money on something you hate? You'll get on track when you discover your true vocation. Nursing isn't it.

You have pulled over to the side of the road, the scenery is boring and your feeling trapped in the decisions you have made (and those made for you) but I think you need to start the engine again and suck it up baby, your almost there.
Focus on the future; it won't always be like this.
Sure, you might decide you hate nursing after all in 4yrs but damn if you didn't give it your best shot and make your Mom happy if only for a short while.
Finish the journey and when you get to your final destination you can look back and be proud of how you got there, regardless of the career you finally choose.

Best of Luck to you :-)

I like the suggestion that you find out what you really want to do. You may be tired of forcing yourself to succeed in a field you don't like. If that's so, go find out what you can do with the courses you have under your belt. Is there something in a related field that you would prefer? Maybe you aren't a nurse, you are really a pharmacist. Mom may be paying for your education, but she isn't the one who has to show up for work everyday after you graduate. You need to be in a career field that fits you.

If that field is nursing, then do some research on burnout. It happens a lot when you are really working hard and just run out of steam. (I've had so much fun with burnout that I've enjoyed it many times over a 35 year career. :) ) Much like depression, the way to get out of burnout is to recognize that's what is happening and find the tools to counter it. It may be self talk (I'm going to show up for this course and finish it because I'm not a quitter) it may be medication (Prozac has been my friend.) It may be something else. (Find a study friend?) For me, the first step in getting out of burnout or depression is to fake it. Go on as if you were already cured. Gradually, whatever you are doing will kick in and you will be cured.
