Is journalism really a true career?

First of all, journalists don't really 'do' anything. They write....and while I consider this a decent way to earn a living if you're an actual writer, journalists aren't paid to be creative. They are paid to report the facts

I have read bloggers from both ends of the political spectrum and they do it for free and their take on things are usually just as good or better than any paid journalist.

Honorable professions in my book include electricians, programmers, teachers, doctors, engineers, nurses, etc...things that actually take some schooling.

Journalists would get angry at this b/c they have a degree of course...(most of them)...but since it is becoming more obvious by the day that they can't keep their smug little opinions to themselves..(violating journalistic ethics in its most basic form) what good is their education worth?

Any thoughts?

The pen is mightier than the sword.

Historically, the purpose of journalism was to report the facts without inserting the journalist's personal opinion. The reporting was supposed to be objective. Personal opinion was supposed to show up only on the editorial page. This was the Fourth Estate, the professional journalist.

Current journalists do not report the facts. They report what happens shaded by their opinions and slant on the facts. So, facts have morphed from that which is real to that which has been spun by the "journalists."

It's sad.

You are free to have your opinions, but they are unsubstantiated by facts.

Want an example? Many programmers work for free (Open Source)- does that invalidate programming as a profession?

Anyway, you have an equally shallow understanding of journalistic ethics as well.

to explain why would take way too much time and detail here, and it is not clear that you would appreciate the argument or understand it. If you were really asking a question instead of ranting (and not even a good one at that) I might be willing to give it a shot.

But why bother really, since you are not really looking for an answer to anything, since you know everything already?
