What do I need to do to become a Registered Nurse?

I have decided that I want to become a Registered Nurse, due to the large shortage of male nurses in the area. Currently I attend Cerritos College (community), and I am having trouble really finding out what I need to do. There are a few prereqs that I have seen that I am going to take, but I am wondering if I can even become an RN with just an AA from a community college, or if I will actually need a Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing through a university. If at all possible, please clarify what is needed to become a RN. I have talked to a couple of counselors from my school, however I leave the office even more confused, and I often get the feeling they're rushing me to leave and get onto their next appointment.

I have been going here since Fall of 2004 (part time originally, but now full-time), and I have been doing my general education. I am now at about 60 units......to my dismay I found out to get into the nurse program all I needed was to take 4 or 5 classes..please help!

that's what i am going to school for now! it's taking me 4 years, and there is alot of pre classes you take, i am just in the beginning, so go online at your college and see what it offers and what you have to do, mine is bachelor, community is only 2 years isn't it? i know you could do the LPN but I don't know about R.N good luck!!

Where I live it takes a long list of prerequisites and then a 2 year course at a community college nursing program.

I live in SC and I'm a nursing student.. U have to tell your advisor that your major is ADN (associates degree nursing) then u have to have English101, and 102, Math 102 or 120, pyschology201, two electives usually medical terminology, or cpt101. Biology 106, 210, and 211. All of those are before u even get into the nursing program, then after that u start your core nursing classes.. Oh also here we have to be a CNA first(certified nursing assistant) check about that where u are. U don't have to go to a 4-year college if u don't want too.. but all you'll have is an associates degree from a community college.. I guess your best bet would to find an advisor who knows something but I hope I helped u to get started..

I don't think you can do it only on an AA. I think you'll need a BS degree. There's CNA, LVN, and then RN. They can make up to $45 an hour in this area. You should call your local college and ask them about their nursing program. It maybe harder to find work being a male though. Many females don't want a male nurse...

Yes, you can become an RN by receiving education at the community college and attending full-time for ony two years. I am an administrator at two-year instituion in Texas. We call the degree - Associate Degree in Nursing A.D.N. and once a student passes the registered nurse exam then they become an RN. (Forgive me that I do not know the test name).

At Navarro College there are only a few general core courses that are required prereqs as well. Our ADN program is VERY COMPETITIVE so I would suggest completing all prereqs. with a grade of 90 or higher (A) and getting any type of job/experience in the medical field.

A BDN - Bachelor Degree in Nursing would pay you more in the long run and may allow for a job in a specific place (town, hospital, office, etc.). Navarro College has an agreement with University of Texas, Tyler for our students to "bridge" from the ADN program to the BDN. You may want to finsh at the community college (cost is MUCH lower here in TX) and then continue at the University where your general core classes that you have already completed will come in very handy!

Also, the deadline to apply for nursing school at NC was back in Feb. so you may have already missed the application deadline. We require prospective students to attend an information session to even get the application (this is only for Nursing school applications, as community college are open doors instutions). This may be your only set back.

I would suggest researching what local University has a BDN program and talk with them. You may be better off finishing the general core curriculum, graduating from the community college and transfering to the BDN program.

You have a couple of options . . .both will get you to your goal.

Hope this helpls.
