Can anyone give me any advice? i am doing a Certificate in CHildcare and Education course at college?

And am starting to think about my career! What is the difference between nursery nurses in private day nurseries and schools? And also can you tell me what they do? Sensible answers please

I have been a qualified Nursery Nurse for 7 years and work within the education settings.
Education school settings are curriculum based and have a Nursery teacher full time as well as Nursery Nurse or now known as Childcare Development Workers, and other specialist relevant to the individual child, each child in Scotland given 2 years in a nursery environment and held back a year if it is in the child's best interest,
No parent pays a fee for a state nursery it is financed by the Government. Childcare workers MUST have the necessary registration with the child board and relevant qualifications.

Private sector is financed by the parent or subsided by Government benefits, dependent on parents salary.
Private does have to follow the 3-5 curriculum, (now changing to 3-18 curriculum soon) but there is no full time teacher, only drop ins, if specialist people are needed, it is up to parent to initiate it, and children can be there from 8am to 6pm, and from 6 weeks to five years old, Not all childcare staff has to be qualified and salary is much less.

To me, i learn more and get more from interaction within an education setting.

Sorry forgot to add your remit... would include in both settings, set up of nursery equipment, curriculum based activities, observation and reports, assessment of every individual child, transition into primary (state only nursery) preparation and serving of lunch (cooked from fresh at private) snack in state, health and safety, confidentiality involving child and families and soo sooo much more....

As far as I'm aware there is no difference between nursery nurses in private nurseries and school, except maybe hours (day nurseries often open 8am to 6pm 52 weeks a year) and probably pay (schools are obviously run by councils and private are often run for profit). Both will have to do planning, observations, more planning, provide learning opportunities, build positive relationships with both children and parents, and unfortunately loads of paperwork. Still a rewarding job, although very badly paid.

If you're in the UK, don't go to work in a private nursery - you'll be working in a "key worker" profession for low pay, but because it's in the private sector you won't be eligible for the help that key workers get with accommodation.
